Your take on the 62 AVRI strat

I'm thinking of getting one, but shipping over to where I am would round it up to about USD300 more than whats listed on MF.

Getting it here from a dealer would cost about USD2500 so the best way is to get it shipped.

Whats the resale value of the AVRI maybe in 10 years from now?

I keep all my guitars in mint condition, even those from a few years back have no scratches, only on the pickguards.

I like the vintage vibe of the 62 AVRI, but I'm more concerned about the resale value.

Any help and comments would be good.
Thanks in advance.

Well today in the UK a ten year old AV'62 would go for something like £800, and from my cloudy memory they sold new for about £800 ten years ago. So they haven't kept pace with inflation and anybody selling one wouldn't get all their money back.

If you want to 'invest' in a guitar there are far more likely inflation proof candidates than ordinary production line Fender's.

hm... okay thanks. :)

So is it even worth shelling out the money for it?

Considering it won't even flitch in the price after ten years?

I'd put it through lots of playing and eventually it'd look worn out and stuff. But I won't abuse it to the point where it got murdered.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Are you buying it to play or as an investment? To play the AV62 is probably a great choice, as an investment it most certainly isn't. If you're so hung up on future resell values perhaps you're collecting the wrong thing. Sorry to be blunt, but you must know they make thousands of these things. Why not buy one used and then have it shipped to you, that way someone else has taken the majority of the hit.

Used ones are kinda difficult to come by here. And many don't ship to where I am.

I am buying to play and an investment as in a personal collection.

If i get it new and shipped from the US, its about RM 5900 (USD 1700), if I buy it from a local dealer its about RM10000 (UDS2800).

Which is about 1.1k USD more.

But I'd look at the option of getting one used, just difficult to come by where I am. Its much easier to get one new shipped in cause a broker will get stuff in for a 5% commission of the price. Less shipping.

Here's my take on all of this, If you pay a fair price for the guitar and play it for 1 year or 10 and sell it. You really haven't lost anything as long as you stay in the market. It's kinda like you buy in at the currant rate and then go along for the ride.

I see it like this.........I have a 66 Deluxe Reverb that I bought 8 years ago, I got it for what it was worth then and could sell it for what it's worth now and move on to something like it to stay in the market. if I get out, the price of these amps has doubled and then some in that time frame. But all that really means is that am if still playing guitar want to stay into it you really can move around. if I ever stop playing I will sell off of my stuff at most likely for more than what I paid for it. So buy used good (AV RI's, CS fender) stuff and you aren't going to take a beating.

If you want to invest you go to the stock market. Do that too and have fun playing guitar in the mean time............

+1 you'll probably be able to get your money back or even make some cash but is that why you want the guitar?

Buy a guitar you like to play and that sounds good to your ears.
You might get hit by a truck tomorrow morning. ( Hope you don't though!)

There are Strats that come on the market around the same price of a second hand AV '62 (or less) that will go up in value, and are now starting to race ahead after a slow start. And that is the JV Squier series of 'vintage' Strats and Tele's from 1982. These are the ones that scared Fender witless when the top brass saw the quality of them, and they are highly sought after today. Forget 'Squier' on the headstock, these are serious guitars.
