BB!
Years ago, I had ( well, still do ) a habbit of recording CD's to tape for my car and not writing who or what they are on the tape. As a result, I have about 200 unmarked tapes from the last twenty years. They have been stored for the last 5 - 6 years. Last night, I was looking for something in the garage and came across the tapes. I grabbed a handful and stuck em in the car for road listening. Well, the first one I grabed and put in this morning was BB "Live at the Regal". I had no idea it was his birthday, but it does not suprise me. I swear, I got chills this morning listening to his incredible note choice and vibrato. A true master. I hope he continues to play the blues for many, many more years to come. Happy Birthday BB. Thank you for years of enjoyment and all the cool lick's I've stolen from you!

Happy Birthday to the KING!
To me he is the top blues player of all. And at 78, he is still touring and touring year in year out.
Read his bio just couple of months ago. Excellent read.

A pale second, but better than nothing...
.... There's a DVD I have, I believe it's called "The Jazz Channel Presents BB King" - GET IT!
It's almost like an "Austin City Limits" deal, BB and his big band on stage in a "nightclub" atmosphere, with the crowd seated at tables, instead of concert/theatre seating. I found this DVD after seeing BB (FINALLY!) live a couple of years ago, and watching it took me right back to the live show... missed some of his stage patter, but the music vibe was right on. It might be out of print, but scan eBay... I was hoping that maybe this was a Vestapol DVD - I have some cool Freddy King stuff from them - but it doesn't appear in their catalog on the Stephan Grossman's Guitar Workshop website... My personal fav BB CD (for the moment, anyway) is "Blues on the Bayou" - no "hit" songs, but I love way the band works, and the mix seems to feature the B-3 a bit more - my OTHER passion. I think BB is actually credited with the director/producer's chair for this one, and there are lots of featured solos from the band's "other" guitar player, who cooks it straight (slides, no bends) and runs it jazzzzzy and cool. I dig the groove, baby. ***** A quick update - the DVD IS available from amazon.com |
