Played a Strat-o-sonic DVII
I got to give one a good test run yesterday. It sounded OK but really did have any of the umph I expect out of P-90s. The neck felt awkward to me but I got the hang of it after a few minutes. The fit and finish was alright - nothing special but definitely adquate. Overall I was underwhelmed for the money. They cost $999 on the street. Then I grabbed a faded Gibson Les Paul double cut with P-90's. This sounded great, it had all the punch I was looking for. It felt great too. It was $599. Fender isn't going to sell many of these Strat-o-sonics if the stores have these Les Pauls hanging anywhere nearby.

flip side
Okay,
While I was shopping (for what turned out to be my new ASAT Classic), I tried a used Stratosonic, $750. It was a close call. The combo of the hollow body & the P-90-style pups through a reissue Super Reverb was, well, *amazing*. I don't know if it was the amp, the guitar, or what. Maybe I got a "good" one. Maybe you played a "bad" one. I dunno... In any event, it was a close call. The ASAT was just a little closer th what I was looking for, I guess.
