I have a 1989 in Pewter. My favorite guitar and I have many Fenders. The neck is really a handful and the pickup and booster work really well. Many sounds.

As hinted at in 3 posts above; regardless of what strat you use to emulate EC, imho you are going to need a big Tweed amp....or a Marshall JTM 45 derived from the 5F6A. Until EC went back to this type of amp, his STrats never got the tone that could pull off the Cream things to my ear. The STrats just don't push an amp like his Gibsons did back in the day. RE: the TBX tone controls...if EC did go away from the TBX, it would be the mids that are in those TWeed-type amps that would allow him to do so.
For my personal needs, I can't play the V neck; so the Signature EC STrat just won't do it for me. AS for the sonics, I have ordered a custom set of EC fingers and ears....but they seem to be backordered. (;^)

I really liked the necks on the recent models, and the sound was great. I liked the pickups. With that said, you could probably make yourself one with some creative Ebaying.
