The ultimate Strat solo?
Okay then let's all name what is in our opinion the ultimate Strat solo.
For me it has to be David Gilmour. And his ultimate Solo (in my own opinion) is (or should I say: Are) the lead breaks in the "Live at Pompeď" version of "Echoes" ![]() Gilmour during one of the Lead breaks on the "Live at Pompeď" performance of "Echoes" Man what a vicious tone he got on that gig, it gives me goosebumps whenever I play that particullar version of that song, it's not the best known Pink floyd song nor is it his most melodic one but man talk about tone.

You expect a simple answer to this?
I guess I can add to the list but man it's way too long.
I would say the solos that give me chills up my spine are; -ABITW- Pink Floyd -Waiting For The Rain To Fall-WickedGtr -Crying, Waiting, Hoping-Marshall Crenshaw

I could name many great Strat solos, namely by Jimi, Dave Gilmour, SRV, Richard Thompson, Eric Johnson, and many others--but possibly my most favorite is Jeff Beck's "Where Were You."

Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay
...but since most people probably aren't familiar with that one, I'll toss out Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs. The whole thing is a solo. Edit to correct Trower instead of the original post - Montrose. Sorry.

True for (Brick)
It was a P90 LP Goldtop.
The first solo was recorded straight into the mixer. Later it was reamped from tape over his usual stack of Hiwats. Maybe Marshall. The Gilmore solo sound was always a bit to the fat single coil side. As far for the favourites. I go for Gilmore on D S O T Moon Comf. Numb, Knopfler(Lady Writer), SRV(Lenny) Hendrix Little Wing and Jeff Beck On Guitar Shop. |

I don't know about "ultimate", given there are so many great ones to choose from, but one of my overlooked favourites is Junior Marvin's solo on Bob Marley and the Wailer's Waiting in Vain.
BTW, here's an interesting Strat Chronology. |

For a Strat solo, I've always thought Ed King's lead on Sweet Home Alabama was pretty smokin'. |

Watermelon in Easter Hay is on side 3 of Joe's Garage. An even better...and also even more obscure solo...is on the studio (instrumental) cut of What's New In Baltimore (the whole last 3 minutes of the 5 minute track), on Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention. That track also appears on one of the Rykodisc edition Cheap Thrills CDs.

+1 on Calvery Cross by Richard Thompson
Single Handed Sailor-Dire Straits (Communique) About anything on Jimi's Electric Ladyland Jerry Garcia on "Wall Song" by David Crosby and Graham Nash or Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember My Name" or Paul Kantner and Grace Slick's "Chrome Nun." When someone says "Strat sound" those are the songs I think of. |

it's not anything i turn up the radio for, but...
...i guess i sorta think the most popular song with a guitar solo that has the purest, most characteristic, uncolored, un-effected, un-overdriven strat voicing is "lay down, sally." it's the song i name when people ask what the strat sound is.
(now tell me THAT wasn't a strat!...) |
