Steuert Smith

Stuck home watching The Eagles on Bravo tonight. Why doesn't my Strat sound like Steuert Smith's Strat? Wait, don't answer that. That guy's playing is so cool and that Strats tone was inspiring to say the least.

Anybody got the rundown on the pickups he's using in that thing? They look like some blade things.

Sorry for the delay in answering this, but it seems I read somewhere that the sunburst strat with black pickup covers is a '66 or '67 with some kind of EMGs. Now, I always think of EMGs as active replacements for humbucker size pickups, but maybe these are old or different or I just remember it wrong. I will try to find the old Guitar Player story about him.

Anyway, he is a fine guitarist. He has a reputation as a studio guy, but he lives in the DC area rather than Nashville. I saw him a couple of times with Shawn Colvin, once live and once on Austin City Limits, and he was really something in that format: Shawn on acoustic rhythm, Larry Klein on electrified-acoustic bass, and Smith on a couple of strats. He used an off-white one live for Wichita Skyline, and I seem to remember he played slide and open tuning on that.

Steuart Smith: my F.T.P.W.D.A.P.A.T.

(Sorry, I didn't see it either, or I would've jumped in as well...) :-|

Steuart Smith gets mentioned here fairly often – if you'll check with the "Search" feature above, you should be able find a lot of good info (watch your spelling of "Steuart"...). I've been a BIG fan of his since the mid-70s when we were both knocking around the same gigs on the DC bar-band circuit.

And almost every time his name comes up, I usually pop up with the same contribution, namely that Steuart has always been my personal "Favorite Telecaster Player Who Doesn't Actually Play A Telecaster" – so why should this time be any different? ;-)

Oh, and one thing about Steuart's tone, if it helps: he normally plays with a thumpick and bare fingers. He's also quite unfairly the possessor of a double helping of both chops and taste... hee. ;-) CS

I remember in the early 90's Danny Gatton talking him up in a GP interview, I think it was.
