Palm-muting technique on a strat?
I come from the world of teles and I don't quite get how to properly palm-mute with that darned volume knob in the way all the time.
Is there something I'm missing? I am thinking that that first tone pot is gonna get removed and the volume pot moved down into it's place. Are there any schematics for doing that? I'm guessing that I'd just run the wires from that tone pot to where the other tone pot wires go? |

I started with strats, and it's still my number one guitar. Palm muting is a huge pain still. I always just thought I was bad at it until I opened my world up to teles and my acoustic.
I usually just play with my pinky to one side or the other if the knob and pray I don't hit it.

I did exactly that, master tone pot at the very bottom, volume pot in the middle hole, and one gaping, empty hole where the volume pot should be. Lends it a nice air of customization...

Palm muting a strat takes a little time to figure out. You'll get it. I actualy like having the volume knob there because I can use my pinky to do volume swells and violin type tones. I also like having two tone knobs, it's easier to set the tone where you want it. Strats are built that way because they're different. If you don't like it, don't play a strat. If you want to mod it, go for it. Everbody is different, there is no right or wrong when it comes to stuff like this. And as Telliot said, be carefull with the darn middle pup. That is one thing I'm still working on with playing strats. I've got the palm muting down pat, but I must watch out for that middle pup. Just spend some time with it, and you'll get it. It will just come to you one day, and you'll say oohhh that's how that works.

The wiring diagram Phostenix kindly put up a link to,is the way that I like best.I am constantly hitting the volume pot, turning it down and see no reason to have more than one tone pot
P.S. Phostenix, though you donīt mention it,I think that your strats volume is a Fender S-1 pot and that there is a hexaphonic pickup (Roland?) mounted on the guitar?I may be wrong about the pickup. Last edited by limbe; February 19th, 2012 at 11:13 AM. |

I think that defeats the purpose of what they're discussing. The volume knob is in the way when playing, so removing the volume knob and relocating somewhere else is a solution to make more room. Putting a dummy knob would still be in the way and be useless.

I suppose that makes me the dummy... He did specifically say "in the way". Guess I was projecting my own issue with it. I sometimes have trouble with inadvertently turning the volume knob up/down when palming the strings. If it were a dummy knob that I could rest my pinky on or next to without effing things up that would work fine for me. Wouldn't be in the way. And I like the way a stock strat looks. Just my 2 cents.
