500k pots?

anyone here use 500k pots on their strats?

do you think the guitar still sounds "stratty" or are the pots an important part of the "strat sound" ?

Well, with a lot of Strat pups I would say they would get to bright or shrill with 500's.

That's not a good tone.

Would it not be possible to just have tone pot rolled off most of the time, and just turn it up as a sort of "top boost" when necessary?

The 500 k pots I have tried havenīt been good volume controls for normal SCs.They have had uneven sweeps.I have a small stash of one brand of 250 k pots, that have the smoothest sweep I have encountered.(They donīt sell them anymore,so itīs meaningless to write the brand.) Iīve got one Strat with Schecter pickups(they are very similar to Duncans Quarter Pounder with high resistance and output. In that Strat 500 kohm pots work well.I agree with sjtalon. If you want pots that you use as volume control, stick to 250k and try to find ones with a smooth sweep.

I currently have one with 500's. It sounds plenty "stratty" to me. I've taken apart more than a few with 500's, especially Squiers. I took apart a MIM Deluxe Players and it came from the factory with a 1M vol, 500K tone, and a 250K tone.

The differences are subtle, but stratty just the same.

Quality of the pot and type and measure of cap will change things as well. I like 2 Volume 1 tone and used to use 500k for the 2nd volume and 350k for the bridge. If it gets to bright for ya just add a .047 cap into it or inline with the offending pickup.

I like to stick with 250k for single coils but for HSS sometimes I use a 500k volume and 250k tone.
RS guitar works has a 280k volume pot that is great for SC's if you don't mind spending the $$ for it. 270-280k on a volume pot can be a "magic" area for most single coil pickups wound to 50's and 60's specs.

D.Allen, what value pots would you put in a dual P-90 guitar and why? I think but do not know for sure, its got 500K's in it now. The neck sounds great but the both and especially the bridge pickup is too darn bright for me. I have to keep the tone knob at 6-7 for it to be useable with any kind of OD.
