Some 40+ posts and yet...

...noone´s mentioned Hank B. Marvin. Active for nearly
half a century and instrumental (sic!) in defining "good
Strat. tone" - a stellar musician.
Mark Knopfler in his early Dire Straits-days using the in-between settings.
Buddy Holly for his then fresh style and sound.
Robert Cray - technique, tone and taste.
Eric Johnson - first-class player.
These guitarists imho, bring out the very best classic Strat.-tones and are mentioned in no particular order. 8)

Well, Bone...

...I guess if Buddy Guy just played thru a Twin or some other Fender amp, his tone was gorgeous. It used to be! But many of his modern/recent recordings sounds very fizzy and weak. I don't know what guitar and amp he's using at the moment. Classic Guy seems to be Stratocaster + tweed Bassman. He's a wonderful guitar player, with a real personal sound. You could tell it's him in an instant (if he's not using a ****ty amp). A bona fide blues hero.

I agree w/ Knopfler and Gilmore and must add Dick Dale to the tone list. His tone INVENTED a style of music, not to mention reinvented the guitar amplifier.

Strat Tones

Lurrie Bell, and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. When I was a teenager I'd drive 100 miles to see Luther cut with
Muddy....Without question he's the reason why I own a
Stratocaster. One listen to "Get Out On The Floor" on
"Doin' The Sugar Too" and all your notions of what a guitar solo's supposed to sound like will be altered forever. If Lurrie comes to where you live GO, I've only seen him once and that was over 20 years ago and his
tone is still fresh in my mind, from what everyone tells me that's seen him in the last two years he's in a class
by himself.

For the "still living" I would rank Tom Principato and Buddy Whittington (who plays in John Mayall's band) at the top of my list. Does this Anson Funderburgh play for someone else or can you find CD's with his playing under his name? Thanks...

More:

Other than early Buddy Guy:

Pee Wee Crayton (after he got that red Strat from Leo in -54; listen to "Runnin' Wild")
Knopfler on the first LP
Anson Funderburgh
Hank Marvin
Ronnie Earl
Omar Dykes (check out "East Side Blues" on the LP I Told You So)
Hendrix, of course
SRV, for that "low gut" power sound
many, many more... 8)

Don't care much for the Eric Johnson school of compressed hi-gain strat though...

Lightnin' Boy, look for Anson Funderburgh CD's under...

...Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets featuring Sam Myers on vocals and harp. My fav Anson CD's are "Live At The Grand Emporium", "Sins", "Tell Me What I Want To Hear", "That's What They Want", and "Which Way Is Texas?" (His new CD. I have an unmastered copy and it's killer). Keep in mind on the first 4 CD's I mentioned, Anson is playing through his Super Reverbs with his (authentic) vintage '57 Strat. On the new CD he is playing through his (relatively) new Dr.Z MAZ 38 Invasion 2x12" combo. He likes the Dr.Z so well he is having Mike Zaite (Dr.Z) make another one for a back-up. The CD's show a great contrast in tone between the Super Reverbs and the Dr.Z (Buddy Whittington uses one of these too.). Both sound superb in their own way. Anson is a MONSTER blues player and as good as his CD's are, they don't even come close to doing his live performances justice. The 3 words that come to mind when I think of Anson's playing are: smooth, elegant, and soulful. Great, great, player! See him. You won't be sorry, especially if you like authentic straight ahead blues. 8)

I'm surprised that Robbie Robertson...

... has only been mentioned once. His guitar work with The Band was distinctive and tasteful. Plus he has chops to spare. Ever catch him with EC on "Further On Up The Road" from "The Last Waltz"? I know guitar playing isn't a competition (yeah, right!) but Robbie went toe to toe with a king of the heavyweight division and more than held his own. Robbie deserves props for tone and chops.

In no particular order...

Living:
- Knopfler
- Gilmore
- Clapton
- Cray
- Keefer

Dead:
- Hendrix
- SRV
- Keefer

And I almost forgot, myself butchering all of the above in the privacy of my very own basement. Of course with the wife and kids away so I don't get complaints. Now if I could just do something with those pesky neighbors.

BTW, for some reason Keefer is always associated with a tele but no one seems to remember he played a fair amount of strats in the seventies and early eighties. At least when I saw them play.

None other than

The one and only Lee Roy Parnell.

Doesn't gig with Strats any more (G*bson endorsement) but his best tone was with a Strat. He played mine at the Mid-State Fair in CA., a couple weeks ago (used my Bassman for the gig) and he sounded GREAT. He likes my CIJ Strat.

I heard him on Austin City Limits. I was totally floored with the sounds he got. His setup(s) of Marshalls and Fenders seemed capable of seamless transitions; Travis-picking one minute, and then a full-out Hendrix tone the next. Eric has always amazed me with his Strat, and his guitar phraseology.—And he ain't too shabby on wringing out an ES-335 for tone(s), either!

Strat tones

Quote:
Hughie Thomasson (Outlaws & Skynyrd)
I dunno—IMHO you've put ole Hugh into some pretty Strat-o-spheric company:
SRV
Clapton
Jeff Beck
Lee Roy Parnell
Eric Johnson
Jimi
Trower
Blackmore
..and..
Hughie Thomasson ?

I've recently heard him w/ Skynyrd, (admittedly doing covers)--and wasn't too impressed with his new tone. I do have a bias, as I've watched him since before his infamous days as "Sphincter-Man" in the guitar army!

His tone back in the early Outlaws/Four Letter Words days was very impressive. He really tore it up in the Tampa "biker-bar circuit," as well as out at U.S.F.. Ah, heck, familiarity breeds contempt, and I probably just caught him on a couple of bad recent shows...

same names seem to mostly keep popping up...

...so I'll throw 2 that are probably way less familiar:

Jim Thomas of the Mermen. sonic delight from ultra clean all the way up to distorted madness. but don't investigate his rig if you have G.A.S. - it's insane! at one point he was grafting 2 Strats together to make them into doublenecks w/2 diff. tuning schemes. and he runs 3 amps - a pair of Dual Showman heads (thru diff. cab setups) and a Twin.

Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets. Just a '57 RI Strat into an old Silverface amp. I saw the band live - he played EVERYTHING on the bridge pickup - unbelievable!

best part? they are both alive and young (by today's standards).
