Yeah--if you hook it up let me know you're impression of it. I'm doing a partscaster and thought I might try it too but I'm not too close to wiring yet.

I do it to all of my Strats, but I also go for the blender/master tone:

This way you get the neck and bridge, or all three pickups together.

yes i have a fender koa strat wired this way. works well for ALL pickups as you can get ALL COMBINATIONS.

1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 1, 2, 3 and 1-2-3. and 1-3 can be blended together; and 2-3 or 1-2 blended to 1-2-3.

i highly recommend it to anyone who owns a strat. everything to gain and you still have the standard positions, but now with master volume and master tone for ALL positions.

I use the Jimmie Vaughan schematic for my current Strat cuz I like having separate tones for the bridge and neck. The middle is always wide open tone-wise which actually makes it usable by itself. I tried the blender but didn't think have those two extra options was worth the trade-off.

My original question was about having the tone pot wired to the jack instead of the volume. The guy who did the article seems to indicate there's some 50s magic in this approach.

Fezz, that's exactly the diag I have been looking for.......all my Strats are currently 'blender mods' so combining these two seems perfect for me.

Brewbaker, it's really worth it mate.......

Yep. Time permitting, I'll apply the 50's wiring mod tonight.

Keep ya posted.

Well...I did the wiring like the diagram says. I'm not sure yet on the sound I'm getting. I may get back into it and put it back to stock. To my ears....it sounds weaker. I'll check the other wiring and make sure its good.

Edit:
Well, I took the strat apart one last time late last night and put the two wires back to the way they should be stock, with the exception of adding the crossover wire to get tone control on the bridge. I also took out the spragues and put in the rsguitarworks caps...those big black ones...

Now it sounds a ton better..at least to my ears. I guess I like a more modern sound...since I already have the Cray to get that 50, 60 ish tone.

Cheers.

That's the diagram I got with my blender pot. Is your guitar wired exactly like that diagram? If so, I guess you're not using your tone pot. I have mine wired to be a master tone pot for all three pups.

Hmmm. having a master tone pot is something I had not thought of. Are there any drawbacks to having that...

Yes. I'm using the tone pot. It's right there in the diagram.

I had a guitar tech make this mod to my JV Strat. I replaced the stock pickups with a Lollar Blonde set at the same time. I'm really pleased with the results and do not miss the 2nd tone control at all. The ability to engage the bridge and neck pickups, as well as all three offers some pretty interesting tonal options. Bridge and neck sounds a little like a Jazzmaster in the middle position, while all three sounds like quack on steroids. I like it.

The last time I put the tone control after the volume, it made the volume act as a tone control too. This is more apparent when both vol and tone are rolled off a bit. If you draw the circuit out you can see why, the vol now varies the resistance from the pickup through the tone pot and cap to ground.

Hmmm. I as thinking about this mod. It's called a 50's mod. Weren't the fifties more about strats with a brighter and cleaner sound as opposed to the 60's when things actually got more gritty and heavier sounding?

To me at least, the description of the mod is incorrect. The sound should not read as punchier and more in your face. It should read...more 50's ish. Cleaner sounding, less in your face and definitely not a heavier sound...like a lot of people are claiming this mod puts out.

Because...I did the mod on another strat, and the result was identical. I wired up the guitar exactly like the diagram indicates and the result was less power, less output, more quack and some funky stuff when adjusting the volume switch.

Just my two cents. I'm off to check my blood sugar. It may be high right now.

Great weekend everyone.
