Guitar Stands

Hey guys. I need to buy a stand for my new strat. Are there any that I should avoid that react with finishes etc.? I have heard that this happens with certain brands that use cheap types of neoprene cushioning on them. Thanks in advance,
-Jack

I like the stands that do not touch the neck. I have a Silvertone stand that has worked well. Have fun, Wayne

I have a Hercules that holds 2 guitars, and it's an excellent stand. But, my everday stand is one of those little A-frame deals. Strat rests on the bottom hooks and the top of the A is a padded piece that lands right on the neck plate. I suppose if there was any finish concern it would be where the body rests on the bottom hooks. If you have a nitro finish you could always put socks on the rubber parts if you have any concerns, but I've only seen actual problems with old vinyl straps blistering finishes. If you've got a poly finish, there is nothing to worry about.

It is an Eric Johnson Strat so the finish is supposedly nitro. Is that foam/rubber stuff that you find on most stands to be avoided? I think I heard that some of that stuff reacts with lacquer.

They all use the same type of "foam rubber" (whatever it is, I don't really know), far as I can tell. If you're trying to protect the finish, I'd probably create a "bootie" of some sort, to be sure.

My acoustic is nitro, and it doesn't seem to be bothered by any of the newer stands. Of course, its 30 year old, bar worn finish could hardly be harmed by much of anything at this point...

I had a nitro Hwy 1 body react to the rubber on my stand. The rubber is that butterscotch colored tubing.

At a local shop (Willies in St. Paul) they have a bunch of their nitro-finished CS strats and teles hanging on Hamilton stands: http://www.hamiltonstands.com/guitar/kb38.htm so I suppose those are probably AOK...

Ok I got a fret rest stand at guitar center with that black foam padding on the parts that touch the guitar. I might wrap the foam in a bandana just in case. This is a new guitar so I am super-paranoid about messing up the finish.

I use a Hercules 3 guitar tree in the studio every day, and have 4 other Hercules stands for stage, road, and other uses. They look good, function great and are very durable. I switched from Ultimate brand stands when two of the leg locks failed.

+1

Keep your nitro finished guitars away from the amber colored "surgical rubber tubing"-type stands. It's the rubber tubing commonly used in slingshots ("Wrist-Rocket" sling shots come to mind), and will eat away the nitro where the tubing touches the paint.

UHMW will not mar nitro according to a luthier that I spoke with before . He used to work for Martin . UHMW is ultra high molecular weight plastic . Otherwise known as a Wal Mart cutting board . Remove the foam and put this in place with confidence .

That is good advice! I have a few of those and use them a lot. Is black rubber ok?

Thanks

That sounds like a GREAT idea!

But I'm not sure what you mean by a "Wal Mart cutting board." Are you talking about one of those very thin, flexible mats? Or are you referring to one of those white boards, maybe 3/8" thick?

In either case, how do you secure that material to the guitar stand???

I have one of these Hamilton stands. I bought it in the '90s. The rubber coated holder will damage the finish of a nitro guitar, especially my Gibson ES-347. This was the first indication that the Gibson had a different finish than my Fenders. I hope they have changed the rubber compound since the 90's.

The other concern of these stands is that you can catch your finger in the guillotine-like movement of the guitar head holder. I did it once on my left hand, and have been wary ever since.

I have had no problem with those Fender guitar stands, on which the guitar is placed on 2 rubber coated feet, and sits on a tripod. The only knock is that they may be easily tipped over, once the guitar is in place. But they are so convienient and compact that I keep one in my effects pedal bag.

I highly recommend http://www.drsracks.com/.

They're worth the cash and built like a tank. Safe for Nitro guitars and a pleasure to deal with. I've got a performer 18 right now holding 2 LP's and 2 Strats. Does a nice job holding them and it looks great too.
