Perhaps many people have not compared/played side by side these two strats either. I was debating a USA STD and a CP 60s and played several of each side by side, but I did not really look carefully at the CP50s (I only played one briefly - not for me). Sorry I can't help.

I own a CP50's, but haven't even played an American Standard, so I'm afraid I cannot help you there. I played the CP50's in a GC, then went and did research. I was immediately intrigued, because it had many of the features I had been thinking about in a guitar.
I liked the V neck, and really loved the tone of the 57/62 pickups. The locking tuners work spectacularly. The appointments that are similar to the American Standard like the two point trem were things I wasn't excited about, but have come around to. I have no complaints about my CP50 at all. It is a perfect vintage tone/playing guitar with modern features that only enhance it.

I have seen this question asked before, many times, except sometimes it was the Series version not the updated Standard. I think the reason why no replies is the Fender price increases, and the bitterness many feel right now. But since some shops have not yet implemented the increase I'd pick: The CP 50's: neck is a little bigger; the going price will normally be a lot less than the Am Std. The locking Gotohs are my second choice to the split shafts, but the Am Std has neither. I like the pickups better also. Plus I think the CP 50's bridge assembly can be upgraded to Callaham almost as easily as the American Standard - maybe it would be great to find an Am Std bridge plate and substitute that for the cheaper CP one. Otherwise I agree with Axis. Personally I'd get the Jimmie Vaughan over either. Olympic White. Yum!

I made my choice by what I could play locally I chose the CP50's over the American standard the nice semi v neck and the pickups on the CP50 is what sold me It had the sound I was after and the overall workmanship was near flawless.

The JV is actually a cross between the two strats I have now... The neck of the CP (Kinda) and the pickups in my Roadworn.... Go figure!
