Best Pickups For Hendrix Tone?

I only own Tele's. My father - in - law is a Strat guy. He wants to upgrade the pickups in his MIM Strat to get a more " Hendrix " tone. Any Strat guys out there have any good suggestions. Thanks, Dale.

+1 for the CS 69 and, it won't hurt to try the pure nickel strings ... like DR pure blues ... they are brighter than your regular D'Addario nickel plated and that's what was the standard in the 60s when nickel was plentiful ... Am I right ?

I just put CS 69s in my first partscaster. They're great and make me sound like Jimi when I'm not even trying. I had to go up to 10s to fight the staggered G magnet pole. It is way up there and makes the G string really stick out while playing rhythm. I am going to get a set of D'addario 10s with the wound G string to fix the problem. (See my recent "G String is Overpowering" post for more ways of dealing with this.)

Another vote for the '69's. The GFS "Jimi's" aunchaki recommends are a good alternative, not quite as robust as the '69's, but good p/u's. Another good GFS pup are the 1960's overwound alnico's. I've got a set and am very pleased with their tone -- rich, full, blusey, sound great clean or overdriven.

Check out Tonerider pickups. I have a Pure Vintage and could not save anything bad about them. Very clear and straty for a fraction of the price.

I have the "upgraded" MIM. I changed the block out for one from Callaham, added the Pure Vintage Tonerider and rewired with master tone/ blender pot.

I'm as happy as a little girl.

seymour duncan used to make one in the early 1980's, I have one in a custom strat from 1984 (neck position), and a jeff beck in the middle position and in the bridge I have an older mid sixties fender pickup..
the hendrix pickup is a very sensitive and sparkly pickup.... cool indeed.

I've had the pure vintage and the classic blues (and their other hotter ones) the classic blues are my favorite. I think they are a bit closer to "jimi tone" than the pure vintage.

just my 2cents

I don't know if you can buy them separately, but the '57 RI pickups are great for Hendrix stuff.

Any well made strat pickup will do if they are not overwound too much. Clean is better and in the 6K +/- area. When I say well made I mean the correct bobbin material, wire and magnets and obviously a good pup winder like a Fralin or Lollar even Fender custom shop 69's are probably fine.
