Amen; that color and tone!
The instructional video that clip comes from is one of my all time favorites.
He was having a tough fight with diabates, hope he's doing better.

Thanks for the post. I've been away from strats for far too long. I'm in the early stages of a new build, though. Stuff like that is truly inspiring. Can't wait to reaquaint myself with my first love, the Stratocaster.

LOTS of "old school" blues chords, voicings, and turnarounds. Not so much instruction on "hot licks" (although there are plenty). A lot of the things he teaches could be effectively played on an acoustic or a resonator, played fingerstyle. It is also a higher quality production, unlike some other instructional DVDs. It is like having RE in a one-on-one super session. He displays an encyclopaedic knowledge of the styles and players that made them famous. The added bonus is watching and listening RE play that early 60's Fiesta Red Strat (I assume it is a real one). Worth the price of admission itself! This DVD is WELL worth the meager price. |

I just love Ronnie Earl. I got turned on to him in the mid-80's in Boston, where he is of course a local hero. He was well known back then as a short-tempered coke addict as well.
His first album "Smoking" (Black Top records vinyl, out of print but reissued on the extended "Deep Blues" CD) was just so good that I just wasn't blown away by SRV like everyone else. Mr. Earl's playing is just so damn earthy, and tone tone tone! I keep that original LP on the wall in my office as a reminder. Besides, it looks great with a set of "girlie" playing cards on the cover He has had so many personal troubles, I wish him all the best. I got to see him here in the Northwest about 10 years ago, but don't think he'll tour out here again. There aren't very many guitarists who can keep an audience enthralled with an all-instrumental set, but Ronnie Earl does it every time.

Mixing laid back rythm blues with explosive licks. BTW that is his original 62 Fiesta Red Stratocaster, and boy does he sound good with it. |

It really helped me with blues rhythm - lots of ideas. Blues lead too - the idea that less is more. Playing with soul, like the title. Lots of turnarounds. Really helped me advance as a player. For about a month, I just played along with the DVD as practice.

Ronnie is a gentle soul and guy who seems easy to love. I really dig his playing and the video. Some ideas include, "play a lead with only three notes. Oops, I played four." He is able to verbalize the concept of playing with feeling better than any teacher I've seen. Great Blues guitar DVD.

+1 on what everyone else said. One of the better instructional DVDs without a doubt. Lots of great ideas and everything is attainable. And man, does he have a great sound and style.
