Squier affinity strat vs standard one

hi,

Could somebody explain the differences of these 2 squier strats?

quality? wood? hardware? finish?

Is it really also about their measures (the thickness of the body, neck , difference in some other dimensions)?

thanks!
tt

I think the Affinity body is thinner than the Standard (at least it is on the Squier Teles). The Affinity will have ceramic pickups and the Standard will have alnico pickups. Checking Musician's Friend, it appears that the Standard now uses a two-point trem, while the Affinity has the six-screw vintage model. The Affinity has a 21-fret neck while the Standard has the 22-fret neck.

So there are subtle differences. I doubt the quality of the pots, caps, jack, tuners, etc... is different. I bet they're the same parts.

For something even cheaper, don't forget the Bullet. There's a recent thread about the luck (good and bad) that people have been having with these under-$100 wonders.

The dimensions are almost identical. Differences include agathis body on the standard, alder body on the Affinity; alnico pickups on the standard, generic ceramic pickups on the Affinity; 2-point trem on the standard, synchronous trem on the Affinity. For my money, I'd go with the Deluxe series. Very nice guitars with better quality control. If you can play all three, you can see the differences for youself. I'd only buy an Affinity or standard I'd played and checked over first. Here's a link to Squire's site with more on the specifactions of each guitar.

Hey, aunchacki, you beat me to the post while I was checking specs! You're probably right about the body thickness. It's not that big a difference, based on the teles.

That's interesting. My Affinity was made when they spec'd Agathis for the bodies on the Affintys too... strange. A little while back, there was a big discussion about how agathis was really asian alder or something like that... I am unsure as to the manufacture of standard Squiers, but I understand that the Affinity guitars are made by various manufacturers, and as long as they fall 'within spec' that guy gets the contract.

My Indonesian made Affinity is not a bad guitar, especially since I bought it second hand, cheap. It is thinner than a standard strat. The ceramic pickups are a little flat, but have a nice 70's tone to them. The neck is pretty thin, and the edges of the rosewood are shaprish. I would get cramps after long band practices with many bar chord songs!

I played it live several times and had nothing but good things to say and had said about the sound of it.

I do not have a standard squier to compare it with, sorry.
