Interesting, they seem to describe it as an "American Stratocaster" not an "American Standard" or "Highway One" - it is simply another entry level USA made model that's not the same as the top of the line?

Now the new "American Standards" are out, they are blowing out the old "American Series". These are the same strats that were selling for $949 prior to January when the new "updated" models were released.

I'd be willing to bet this is a 2007 model Strat -- because I got mine in January, when Sam Ash was blowing 'em out. Candy Cola was the only color available. In no way, an entry-level guitar.
Good news is, it's a very, very nice Strat. I A-B'ed it against the new 2008 models, and I preferred the 2007.

American Standard was the late eighties name when production resumed in the USA after management bought the company back from CBS (recognizeable from the two-point tremolo with pressed scintered steel rectangular saddles). They changed to American Series in 2000 (rolled fingerboard edges, staggered tuners with one string tree, and HSS routing instead of swimming pool which had already been phased out). The name has changed in 2008 with the new American Standard (stamped steel saddles instead of the rectangular ones)
So the ad is a little confusing talking about "American Strats" and I'd have to go with the bet that they've found a way to clear out the 2007 stock of American Series guitars. Now that I think about it, Highway One's would be described with the matte finish so its not one of those. Then again, manufacturers have been known to sell certain models through certain retailers only. There were Sam Ash Anniversary Fenders and there's the Gibson ES339 that you can only order through GuitarCenter affiliates.
