tried shielding a squire strat problem..still hums
I tried to do shielding on my squire strat with no success !!
Bought copper sheets and shielded body cavity... replaced stock pups with toneriders vintage pups hoping that hum would go away ... but didnt I tried to follow that Guitar NUts instructions for shielding a strat but not sure if I did everything right... What or Where did I go wrong.. Has anyone had this problem to 'Quiet the Beast".. the hum only goes away when I touch the string or any metal of the guitar... HELP..... jesse |

I just re-installed the original pickguard on my MIM strat cos I got fed up with the pearloid one I installed a few years ago.
The original guard only had the minimal shielding round the controls cavity so I got some kitchen foil and spray adhesive and covered the entire back side of the guard in accordance with the instructions on the Guitar Nuts site. Before I put the guard back on I double checked the instructions and saw that I hadn't removed the foil around where the screws mount onto the pickups so I scraped this away in line with the photo on the page relating to the tele guard on the GN site. When I put it all together I was really impressed to hear absolutely no hum! When I had put the pearloid guard on I had simply put the foil over the entire back surface and always noticed that there was still some static-like noise when I touched the guard. But this seems to have been eliminated now. I'm not saying that this is your problem but it might be worth checking. |

You can't eliminate single-coil hum, but you can reduce it.
Someone will probably chime in with a way to eliminate the hum with special systems or pickups, but you cannot eliminate hum completely by simply shielding it. |

Thanks for your adivce with the foil , I will try that !!
Yes,, I have been told that the hum will not totally go away by nature of single coil pups,, but I sure want to reduce it, drives me crazy when I plug it into my crate 15w amp,, but DOESNT hum when ONLY use a pedal rpocessor and just headphones. thanks all again for your inputs.... |
