I'm another fan of rack mount delays from the '80's. I use an Ibanez DM-2000 Digital Delay or the Harmonics Delay from the same series. The DM-2000 has an loop so you could patch in an EQ to darken the repeats. Probably overkill for your needs, but I like it. Dickey Betts uses a DM-1000.
It lives in my PA rack, but I have an old Yamaha SPX 90 II that does good delays without sounding too sterile. I also have a Roland Space Echo that cost me about as much as a used Dan-Echo. The gear gods were smiling on me that day! |

Another option
Send your digital delay to Analogman to add a "warm" switch. Basically rolls of the highs so that the repeats aren't so sterile. Does it make it a DM-2? No, but it does give you a nice warm slapback.

Hell, I could probably do that myself... I built a TS808 clone, perhaps I can mod my own BOSS RV-3. I don't think they make them anymore (combo Reverb and Delay pedal) and mine is in mint condition, so I'd hate to ruin it :) If I could mellow out the Reverb on it too, that would be a bonus... it is bright, harsh, and stiff/sterile. Any thoughts on where I could find a BOSS RV-3 schematic or a place with mod help on it? |

IDK, its a bit simple. I've already got a BOSS RV-3 Delay, which has more control over Mix, Delay, Feedback as well as switches for Delay ms options (not to mention Delay plus Reverb options). I'm looking for something a bit more vintage and/or deluxe. If I can dial in less "digital" or harsh sounding repeats that'd be very cool. |

But for JUST a slapback, vintagey sounding, the BLT really surprised me. It's no AD-999, but it's better than my SIB Echodrive at the vintagey thing.

A few months back I bought a Pretty Dolly by Moen. This was a eBay purchase, that was $50.-$60. It's not the best unit but it does just what I want it to do and that is a slight slap-back or just a little longer delay. It works good going into the front end of the amp or in the effects loop.

The Ibanez DE-7 hands down is the best I have found for recreating the tone of the Echoplex with a clean tape. |

For $20 Monte Allums sells a mod kit for the Boss DD-3 that does the same thing as the Analogman mod. Go to: http://www.monteallums.com

I'm a big fan of the Ibanez AD-9 RI. If rolled-off highs is what you're after, it's got it in spades - to the point where I kept my Guyatron digital delay for when I feel like it's a bit too much.
Honestly, the AD-9 is like the opposite of the Boss pedals. It's distinctly lo-fi in comparison, and I like that a lot. It's the only pedal that I use with any consistency.

Well, What you get Johnny? Do tell.
I have the Dan Echo. It sounds great. The High rolloff knob works really really well. It can go warmer than you'd want, or dial back in a little brightness to taste. This pedal does take a little tone away. Honestly, I NEVER noticed it until I specifically tested it. I did some research on the topic and found out that the buffer used isn't up to par and cuts off some highs. There are mods to correct this floating around. But still, I'm quite happy, until something better comes along that doesn't cost an arm and leg. |

What's your definition of arm and a leg? I picked up a Dan Echo used a little while ago and it developed a weird rattling noise... that was an arm and a leg for me! LOL So, I grabbed an MXR carbon copy at 149 and couldn't be happier! It's just about the most I've ever spent on a pedal... cause I really am a cheap bast**d! But I think it works like I paid a lot more than that for it!

To add more fodder... the Line6 Echo Park is incredibly versatile and can easily be used for a great slapback sound in addition to the bagillion other sounds you can get. In fact, the first time I took it to a jam, a buddy used it and said right away "the slapback setting is worth the price of admission alone." I love the tap tempo feature. If I don't like the delay setting I can change it quick and easy without having to stop playing.
I think I got mine used for $80 or $85. I used to use a Dan Echo, which I also loved. I love the Echo Park more. |

+1 on the firstact delay.Way better than it should be for the $$$.Its taken place over my boss DD3 on the pedalboard (which probable means squat to anyone reading this, but I had a thing for that boss...yesiree!).
low on street cred though (my mates were asking 1st wha??!?).
