Fulltone 69 Fuzz pedal

I really like the Fulltone 69 pedal. I kind of divide Fuzz into two categories, the "Musical" and the "Over the top grind". The 69 is in the musical camp which I prefer. They just stopped making it, so prices on used ones have spiked, but I suspect them will come down pretty soon. Fulltone actually makes 5 fuzzes (69,70,soul bender, octafuzz, supafuzz). I have tried them all, they are all pretty good. You can listen to them at the fulltone website.

I recently tried the Durham "Crazy Horse" which does the Niel Young thing really really well (and lots of other sounds too). I was very impressed but I don't know how I would use the pedal in the music I do.

Analog Man Sun Face Sun Dial Fuzz.
Even better combined with the Beano Boost in the Sunlion pedal.

The Boss FZ-3 and the Electro-Harmonix Sovtek Big Muff are my top two favorite right now. The Muff has so many mods you can find for it online it's stifling trying to try them all hah.

All good suggestions - Sun Face, 69 (you won't find these at GC). I would add the Addrock Geranium fuzz. It's a bit cheaper. It has an input level and gets along with other pedals well.

These are all Germanium Fuzz Face clones (The Sun Face can be a Sililcon FF). The amount of Fuzz will vary well with adjustments to your volume pot.

The Muff and Tonebender are significantly different. Keep this in mind when your are at GC trying different ones out.

Are there any specific guitarists tone, or a specific song that you are shooting for? I bet if you say "Yeah, the fuzz on 'Spirit in the Sky' tone is what I want, someone here will know what it is!!

I originally fell in love with the Big Muff tone. Now I prefer my NKT Sun Face. I cant cop the chunk and grind. But I dont use that tone right now. Plus being in a band with a harp, bass, rhythm guitar, and drums. My muff gets lost in the mix. While my Sun Face is always reliable. Plus I can stack it really well with my Keeley BD-2 and even more with my Katana Pre-Amp.

This may sound crazy, but one of my favorite fuzzes of all time is my DOD FX52 Classic Fuzz. But lately I have been using my Prism Fuzz (a BYOC Large Beaver kit)

I've got the Fulltone 69, and I think it's a great fuzz. Admittedly, I haven't played very many, but with this one I really don't have any urge to look around for something else. I would also definitely describe it a musical.

I would like to get a BYOC MkII though -- not as a replacement but as a compliment to what I've already got.

Got myself an old used Schaller germanium fuzz...installed a trimmer, and found where I liked the sound the most....total 60's :D
Otherwise I like KR's Gypsyfuzz.

Holy cow, I thought I was the only person that ever owned the DOD FX52! It was my first real pedal. My friends all had distortion boxes and I wanted something different. It really was a great fuzz. I sold mine a few years ago when I unloaded all my gear to fund a Cybertwin. Wish I still had it! (The DOD Fuzz, not the Cybertwin)

I have a couple of DOD's boxes somewhere in the garage or spare room junk closet, maybe I need to check out my old stuff to see what I have before purchasing more gear on a whim....... genius

Depends on your amp, guitar and what you are looking for.
You really need to try out a bunch of Fuzz pedals as they are all so very different from one another. One piece of advice. Don't use a fuzz pedal in front of a clean amp, always have some slight crunch already going.
If you play a fuzz pedal into a clean amp you will wonder what all the fuzz is about.
The nice thing about a fuzz pedal with a tube amp on slight breakup is that you'll get the most amazing clean tones with the fuzz pedal on, and the guitar volume knob rolled back. Nice, fat full bodied clean. You won't get that without the fuzz pedal. Weird.

Big muff is my fave.Sustain for days, fat & rich, allows feedback games easily.

Fuzz Factory when I want some voodoo, or I feel the need for some insanity.

Blue Box - hmm not really a fuzz, but I'll include it.Just plain weird.gotta love weird.

played thru a few and the Muff/Beaver type of sound is what seems to sound the best to my old ears... think I will order a clone kit..... i think the option of changing out the op-amp could really dial in the tone... any favorite kits out there?

If you can solder, the BYOC FF is a great kit. Comes with germanium and silicone diodes so you can hear the difference and decide for yourself. It uses sockets so you can swap just like tubes. I found a lot of about 30 germaniums on a UK site cheap. Then I built the cheapo gain and leakage tester and “rated” all of them for both. I selected for low leakage and high gain. The “tester” lets you use your voltmeter and costs a dollar or 2 to make.

The coolest BYOC FF feature is the adjustable bias pot (just like the tube thing again.) You can set it “cooler” for more punch and less fuzz potential. Or set it “hotter” for huge compression. I like it in between. The bias is on the board but you could mount it as an external adjustment if desired.

I use mine much more than my MXR Dist+ or my DS-1.
