Now this clears things up for me! I have the DOD Fuzz and I WAS wondering what all the "fuzz" is about! However, I don't have a tube amp and currently use distortion pedals and not the built in amp distortion. Would this have the same effect?

Thanks...I was actually thinking about selling my fuzz but now I think I will keep it!

I have two vintage fuzz faces and one 1st generation vox tone bender. When they are working right nothing can touch them. The 69 comes close and is more flexible with the bias and contour knobs. The prescription electronics experience is very cool.

my favorite is the fuzz factory

I have been looking for a good fuzz pedal lately and I have found quite a few good ones. (check out the link below)

Check out the MI Audio Neo Fuzz.

Keeley Fuzz Head here. Much more versatility than a conventional fuzz with a bit more note clarity, I find.

I got this. http://www.dominocs.com/Library/FUZZbrite/index.html
Sounds pretty close to the original Mosrite and is way more affordable.

Those are cool! Fred, have you heard Cropper on 99 1/2? I think he might be using either the mosrite fuzz or a fender blender... it is weird to hear him playing fuzz! if you don't have the steve cropper album "with a little help from my friends" it is a trip!

Yeah, I'm going to have to dig that album out now that you say that...
I got it to play in my surf band, to do Ventures stuff like the 2000 lb Bee and even some Davie Allen stuff. Works really well for that. It's a pretty ancient sounding fuzz-tone sound, but cool.

Heresy I speaketh of...

I hate to admit it, but my fondness for Fuzz Face clones is dwindling.

Why? They sound best when the amp is just too loud, and I'm starting to be careful about my hearing.

So it's a tie for my other fave 3, which all work pretty well at sane volumes:

-a properly tweaked Big Muff

-Foxx Tone Machine, or decent clone (pretty easy pedal to copy)

-Fulltone Soulbender (I actually prefer it over the Tonebenders)

For me, a fuzz pedal sucks unless it completely envelopes the guitar signal, and it's gotta have a big bottom end. It should be really hard to harness, and I enjoy having to surrender to it.

As far as the mix of rasp/cream, oscillation/feedback, and how well it cleans up when you back off the guitar volume - they are all subjective preferences.

I also agree that the amp should already be a bit dirty on it's own. Stomp on the fuzz, and it should get really exciting.

The only other pedal that I know of that I get as much of a thrill out of is an analog delay that will feed back on the repeats.

Sybil Fuzz from Retro Man is two fuzzes in one. One side GE, one side SI, and they can be blended. Very versatile and he will do custom finishes if you want. Pretty much a modern Fuzz Face.

I use a Fulltone '70 pedal and really like it. I A/B'd it with a mid-80s Fuzz Face reissue I own, and the Fulltone is similar, but has more of a "moaning" sound, which is what sold me on it. I haven't tried fooling around with the adjustable trimpots, because I like the sound of it as is.

I'd love to try a Fulltone '69, but since they're discontinued, I'm not counting on finding one at a reasonable price any time soon.

I have an original Fender Blender and it is just sick, totally over the top, with a tone control that gives you either a thick, muffled sound or a trebly, ear-piercing tone. It's really extreme but I found it to be a little bit too much when playing live.

Voodoo Lab Superfuzz. It does it all for me, from '60's garage buzzy to deeper near-Big Muff sounds. Also does overdrive pretty well.

Hey all,
I'm new here but definitely have a few favorite fuzzes. These all started off as the not-so-great mid 90's red Dunlop FF's. I refinished the casing(s) and redid the decals as well.

Here's my Blue Silicon FF. The pedal itself is a Hartman BC108 that Theo built into the casing (Thanks Theo)! This one sounds a little more raucous than the BC108 clip on his website, but oh so good!

I've been eye-balling the yellow "Crest Audio" Prototype FF since I can remember. I cant imagine walking up to a pedalboard expecting to see blue, grey, or red and seeing YELLOW! High Gain BC109 in this one.

And last but not least, my favorite of the group, this is a my take on a '66-'68 grey FF. I have to honestly say that this is the only NKT-275 fuzz that doesn't leave me wanting for more gain! It's bordering on Si brightness and Gain. Too happy about this one. And it's bone-stock! Dunlop board and all! (Since this photo was taken, I started using a rubberband instead of the center screw, and like it a lot more!). It sounds ridiculous (I know!) but at high volumes it retains the high end a little better. Uh, yeah, I'm an EJ fan...

Take care,
Hale

We've got two among the lot (Zoom Ultra Fuzz, MXR Blue Box and the ones below), for two different jobs altogether.

The Frantone Cream Puff is simply a better Big Muff, great for everything from stoner rhythm lines to brighter-spitting garage punk. Smooth, scoopy, thundering fuzz with sweet harmonics that will send a nicely cooking amp in to Smashing Pumpkins' land. Love it immensely.

Moollon's Fuzz 32. NOS metal-body germanium fuzz, warm and chunky. Delightfully primitive and does exactly what a Ge Fuzz should.
