Seymour Duncan SFX-01
Anybody have one of these (or had one) that you can provide input on. The reviews I find are either love or hate, but I think some are expecting something other than it is.
Here's my background... I've got a Tele (of course) with Seymour Duncan pups. It sounds nice, but I wish I had a little more volume, with no coloring, when I need it. In a nutshell, I like the way my humbuckers drive my amp/effects (Boss CS-1 and DM-2,) and wish my Tele pups were that hot, but don't desire to change them as I like the sound of them. It sounds like this might be the ticket to un-colored, clean volume lift, and the true bypass sounds like a bonus. I just wanted to know if folks here that used it with single coils have had good luck without complaints of excessive noise and such. Thanks in advance!

Well, I ordered one. I'll report back the results here, in case any future generations are interested.

You'll like it. I borrowed one for a while and really enjoyed it. Huge gain boost. Not noisy as I recall.
Had to give it back and decided I could get a similar "effect" with my EQ pedal. Transparent boost, with or without tonal coloration. |

Ok... it's official... I LOVE IT!
Super clean boost. I liked the way something with hot-buckers (had something with EMGs for a short time) drove my tube amp, but preferred my Tele. This has the same push, but, lets my Tele sound like a Tele. But, if I want my Tele to have little more "thickness" to it, it has a resonance switch. The middle setting leaves it alone and just provides the boost. The top setting drops 2-3kHz for what is described as making a single coil sound like a vintage humbucker. This setting sounds kind of SGish to me. The bottom setting drops 3-5kHz which is described as making a single coil sound like a high-output humbucker. This sounds very similar to the Jackson Dinky with EMGs in it that I recently let go of. I tested it in a room with lots of computer stuff (one docked laptop, one desktop, one server, wireless, a hub, DSL and more.) It did amplify the noise that is already present in the Tele in proportion to the volume boost, but it did not introduce any noise that wasn't already present. In a clean environment (or with better shielding on my Tele) I imagine that noise won't be an issue. So, if you've thought about one of these, go grab it. I've not been so pleased with a pedal since I got my Boss DM-2.
