What kind amp are you running? Tubescreamers sound their best when combined with big non-master volume amps on the verge of breakup, pushing them into overdrive; this sound won't be replicated through a smaller non-tube amp.

There's about a million TS clones being built right now, so if you like that nasil TS sound, it's really just a question of which one to buy.

I haven't been following what KWS is doing, but last time I heard him, the guy was way into SRV, who was one of the driving forces behind the popularity of the TS. So go for it, get a TS.

I'm not sure if it's very helpful to put an OD pedal in front of a modeling amp. OD pedals are kind of meant for tube amps.

If you're going for a Kenny Wayne Sheppard sound, a TS into a modeling amp will NOT get you there.

1. Get a tube amp like he uses.
2. Use the same kind of speakers.
3. Use a Strat, preferabley with the same kinda pickups.
4. If he uses a TS it's probably the older TS808 like SRV used, since Kenny is pretty much a SRV clone, himself.

You don't necessarily need a non-Master Volume amp, you can turn the Pre or Gain control down quite a bit and just crank up the Master Volume.

Like chopchop, I also think an OD pedal sounds best when put in front of an amp who's power section is "breaking a sweat".

The TS808 does have a midrange "honk", much like Pete Galati says. One man's "honk" is another man's "nasal". There is a similar difference of opinions with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers and their goosey "honk".

You may be able to get "close enough" just with your modeling amp by itself without a TS pedal.

I'm not sure that you can't get a good sound from an overdrive pedal without a tube amp- If you added a booster pedal in front of it you could push it harder and get a good sound.

Yeah, try using the amp by itself if you can.

Boost pedals drive tubes in very different ways than they'd drive a modeler.

Try a Ibanez TS7 or Digitech Bad Monkey (a tubescreamer with bass/treble knobs and cheap $40 new). From what I've read, the original Tubescreamer was developed to WARM UP solid state amps in the eighties. Why not go to a music store and try one of the tubescreamers with a Line 6 amp (they all have basically the same sounds/model) and will react the same to a pedal.

Enjoy the hunt for "tone" !

I don't know about KWS's Tone, but SRV used vibroverb and tweed amps with a tube screamer into it. He used big strings, but you can simulate that to a degree with Texas pickups.

I have a different viewpoint. I think you can get a similar sound with a modeling amp. I have a Vox AD30VT, and when I have it in tweed mode with my tubescreamer and my Strat with Texas pickups, I can get really close to the tone. Not that I play anything like either of them...

I don't think the spider's have a tweed mode...

You don't need the "tweed mode"...the Texas Flood/SRV tones are Blackface Fender tones...Vibroverbs, Super Reverbs and a few Marshall Majors (200w bass amps) all running hot with a kick of TS. SRV didn't use Tweed bassman RIs until "In Step" was recorded...fwiw

Oh...and KWS is playing a Fuchs now, so there's a new wrinkle...a solid, deep loud and clean tone machine.

I run my Keeley modded TS-9 into a '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue. I like my clean very clean so no "sweat" as JohnnyCrash said. But even so, when I step into the TS-9 it gives me what I'm looking for at about 1/3 to 1/2 the way turned up. YMMV.

JohnnyCrash...your posts usually make me chuckle. How's the midnight wine coming along?
