My first OD pedal was a Marshall Guv'nor 2.. At first I thought it sounded great, but after I started playing with a band I realised it didn't really cut through so well. So I got a Boss SD-1 to boost the trebles a little, and it worked wonders. Still love that tone. Unfortunately, I later realised the Marshall sucked a LOT of tone when it was off, so I would never use it again unless it was looped or something. I still play a lot with the SD-1, but not with a whole lot of gain (who needs that much anyway?), but a great buy now is the Boss OD-3, it has such a wonderful sound! I'm tempted myself, and I personally recommend it. Oh, and stay away from the Ibanez SM7 Smash Box. Very lifeless. AB-ed it yesterday.

I personally had and loved the Marshall Guv'nor II untill it was liberated by a former band member. I thought it worked great in a live setting, and it once rescued a show when we had an amp go down. We ran it into a spare bass head, and through our 4x12 and it was great! Make sure you keep the "deep" control down though. It works on a range that's pretty useless for guitar if you don't want to walk all over your bass player's frequencies.
I hear people swearing by the new Bluesbreaker and Jackhammer too, and I've tried them both, but the Guv'nor still comes closest to the sound of my single-channel JCM800.

I have a Marshall DriveMaster (from the early 1990s) - great for getting a gritty, dirty, heavy British overdrive sound, perfect for 'classic rock' from AC/DC to Neil Young.
And I also have a new Marshall Edward The Compressor pedal - I tested this one extensively against compressors in the same price range from MXR, Line6, DOD and Digitech - the Marshall is better, both in sound/warmth and versatility, and not only a little better but MUCH, MUCH better! |
