Robin Trower is using one of the Fulltone vibe clones.....his early solo recordings (Twice Removed From Yesterday & Bridge of Sighs) famously made use of the Uni-Vibe.....if he's satisfied with 'em, you should be too

Yeh, the Fulltone is great. I recently did a shootout of vibes A/B'd with a real UNI-VIBE from the 60's.
We tried Roger Mayer Univibe Jim Dunlop Roto vibe H&K Rotosphere Voodoo Vibe Fulltone vibe Love pedal vibe Sweetsound Mojo vibe We found the major differences between the real one and the others was the bottom end. Original univibe was tight but throbbed at a frequency that could move you, really hitting your guts. Roger Mayer and Fulltone we're great but the Sweetsound had the edge. These three had the similar organic vibe and anyone would be thrilled with any of them but the Mojo got closest to the original. Still, the original sounded better. Was incredible to hear the original and see how close they could get to it...or not

Check out the Retroman Uber Vibe... Vintage Guitar Mag said it might be the best reproduction of the original Univibe.

like anything it is opinion...
but i do find it odd that as refering to jimi...roger mayer modded all of jimis pedals and much of his stuff is based on the EXACT DESIGNS he used for jimi and what jimi asked for..he is also an acoustic engineer. robin trower used mayers pedals after the univibes before he got an endorsement contract...and the pedal he uses and many/most of the pedals are really more than satisfactory but anything pedal that has to do with hendrix... mayer would be my #1 go to guy... how could it not be as he was hendrix' guy. he's also been building fuzzes since 64-65 for jeff beck jimmy page, big jim sullivan and co- built an early synth for stevie wonder. and as far as a pedal that gets that type of effect i think the closest rival the the mayer voodoo vibe+ is the MOOG moogerfooger cluster flux. here is a small demo of it. and there are more on youtube if anyones interested. http://youtu.be/TpnLVken5sw |
