Digital or Analog Compressor Pedal??
Hey guys...
I'm trading my dl4 for a dan echo and a compressor pedal. The shop has two compressors I can choose from. A janglebox 2 analog pedal and a tc electronics nova dynamics digital pedal and I was wondering if any of you have thoughts on analog vs digital compressors? If any of you have experience with either pedal, good or bad, let me know! The janglebox will cost me 50 euro extra but I don't mind if its worth it! I should be able to have a go of both on my own set up but advice beforehand would be great!! Thanks! |

Well, I wouldn't go THAT far (digital does some things really well) but analog is definitely the way to go for compressors. Doing all that A/D and D/A conversion for a fundamentally analog function such as compression is just kooky.

I have heard that the TC Electronics Nova Dynamics is a good pedal, that you can set it up for a compressor and noisegate @ same time. I would try them out if that's the only choice you have.

I have no experience with either pedal, and I'm not even particularly interested in compressors. Having said that, you know I'm unbiased. It would never occur to me to pick anything but analog for compressors, but then again TC is good, and the pedal probably has some added features. Most compressors have two knobs, maybe three, then sometimes four. Your two choices surpass, so how important is versatility to you?
My point is that if you need a garden variety compressor, then trade for something other than the comp, and later pick up something simpler like an MXR comp elsewhere. These both seem like very niche comps, and I don't know what your needs are. But in a blind pick I'd go with the analog. This is of utterly no help to you, is it? |

Thanks for the help guys.... Think i'll go with analog. The tc looks good but has way more functions than i would ever need!! I may just see about gettin a little dynacomp Pinebomb because all I want is a little compression... one knob should suffice!!

I actually don't have much time... starting to track the guitars for my album next week so I'm in a bit of a rush!! I've researched the janglebox 2 a lot and i really think its the one for me! Testing it tomorrow!
I don't have a line 6 compressor, I have the delay pedal. Its good but all I need is a little slapback and its not great for that!! Thanks!! |

Update!
Picked up a boss cs-2 and I actually prefer it to the janglebox! The Janglebox is great but its noisy compared to the cs-2 and doesn't do subtle compression like the cs-2! I'm going to trade the janglebox in for a nice overdrive pedal! |

I haven't heard a digital compressor in pedal format that I've liked.
There are good digital compressor computer plugins (API2500 for example) that are great, but the hardware equivalent are always better. 'Analog' doesn't = great though. There are some truly dull analog compressors and a few great ones. Current favourite is the Analogman Comprosser.

The CS-2 is awesome, congratulations. I think of recommending them, here and there, but they tend to cost right much for a compressor so I hold back. I have never heard the Janglebox though. For compression, I would def. stick with analog for general purpose.

@Progger.... Picked up the cs-2 for 50 euro, a third of the cost of the janglebox!! I lucked out!! The jangle is super as an effect but for subtle compression like I wanted... the cs-2 rocks!!
