Best BOSS/Ibanez etc size Overdrive Pedal?

Its a seemingly endless quest , but I`m trying to find a nice OD pedal to fit into a BOSS BCB-6 board. So it has to be BOSS/Ibanez/Maxon type size. Obviously those companies are worth checking out.

I`m trying to steer somewhat clear of straight Tubescreamer types and head for a more British darker, full tone, sound, with more variety on tap.

At the moment my eyes and ears are on the Ibanez Jet Driver and the Maxon OSD-9 (Overdrive Soft Distortion). The Ibanez (Chinese made) mimicked the drive channel of a local shops Fender Deluxe Reverb very well, had good tonal variation with the separate Mid and Treble controls, and covered a good gain range, light drive to crunch. The Maxon is thin on the ground, likely well made, only a 2 knobber though, supposedly dark sounding, have yet to try in person but there is a good deal on at the moment here in Japan on this model (guess everyone goes for the Tubescreamers from Maxon!)

Have a Blues Driver BD-2 BOSS (one sound then fuzzy nastiness), Nobels ODR-1 (too big!), Maxon 808 small box (so my TS base is covered).

Running into the Blues Jr set clean-ish.

Also, as I`m on a Maxon kick at the moment (AD-80 and PT-909 snagged),
I`m open to there older models. Recently tested a D & S 1 (Big Muff type) and a D&S II (Tubescreamer?), both oldies and goldies but not exactly what I`m looking for. Any experience with the Power Series anyone? E.g PD-01? etc. Cheap and cheerful perhaps?

Opinions and knowledge?, thanks!

I really like my Jet Driver a lot, so that would be my vote. It's reasonably priced and sounds wonderful to my ears.

I'm going to my grave with my Blues Driver- it's just been a great, versatile OD friend of mine, pretty much since the pedal came out. Gives me the "Fender breakup" (lower gain OD/w no change in guitar>amp tone) at any volume I need. Very dynamic too.

I have the same pedalboard and settled on an Ibanez Jet Driver for the heavier sounds (I can scoop the mids) and a Boss OD-3 for lighter overdrive. Both are great pedals and get you beyond the TS-type sound.

If you have space for only one pedal, you might consider is a Boss OD-2 Turbo Overdrive. I played through one for years and it had some great versatility.

This really got me thinking, and I suddenly realized: the overdrive pedals I like best are all oddball shapes!!!

Go to Wampler's site and pick your flavor. I choose Euphoria.

Just so ya know...the Ibanez/Maxon pedals are ever so slightly larger than Boss pedals, so you might have to file down a couple of those plastic thingies in each pedal slot on the BCB-6 board in order to get them to fit right. If you do, then that slot will be slightly too big for a Boss pedal if you decide to put one in in the future.

Really? I have one of those, just pulled it out yesterday after years in the closet. It was fun fun fun, built-in chorus and doubler.

Boss sd-1 - got it last week. same bass cutoff as ts, different tone circuit, different clipping. So far I like the clipping better, so I can crank the gain higher (personal) and get more wooly with the tone control .. maybe for me so far its the best starting off point of the ts types.

Od3-- just so great my favorite. At low gain it just adds a thump to your sound but crunches and sustains at higher gain

Any misinformation in here is my fault, these are my experiences ymmv

The OD-3 is a good one. It's not exactly what you would call "dark and British sounding" though, so... Boss ST-2 Power Stack? It's supposed to be based on a Marshall and the clips don't sound half bad.

Wampler=good recommendation.
I love that people still love their SD-1. They are nice, but I don't play mine much.

I gotta say, Plimsoul? It does OD & Distortion. Can do a lot of different sounds. And still my number 1.

It's also a shame that you don't allow for a slightly bigger pedal, as I know a lot of people like Barber too.

Maybe an OCD, with the tone turned down, might do the trick... too bad the Dano copies are oddball-sized for a Boss pedalcase... just as another suggestion. I have an SD-1 and several TS types, I find them the same but different... the Boss sounds chewier and more aggressive than a TS, but work the same sonic territory... btw, the OCD plays very nicely when you want to stack overdrives (something I do a LOT!)

As others have said, Blues driver is awesome... but maybe an oddball... I truly love my MXR 78 Badass Distortion... the Badass Overdrive is pretty great too!

Oh yeah, Fuzzbuzzfuzz... welcome to the forum! Hows the weather in Japan?
