Have you ever wanted a pedal, just because of it's name?

I bought an Emma 'Discombobulator' for its great filter sounds...But my step-daughter is named Emma and I have been know to use the term discombobulated in the past...so that might have been the deciding factor

I'm tempted by the Voodoo Lab Giggity, mostly because of its name.

I've actually not wanted some pedals because of the name.
I'm glad SHO is primarily an acronym now that many guitarists are familiar with, and that the circuit is so simple that one can be quickly/easily/cheaply built that doesn't have to say s.h.o. on it. I liked having a Big Muff before parenthood (or when kids were too young to run around saying "my Dad got a Big Muff!" Now, I'd prefer to have a derivative w/o the name. I have a BBE Two Timer and a 10 year old. It's caused more than just a little aggravation. Again, I didn't specifically want the TT - it was just on sale and offered the same or more features as other delays I was checking out. There are some pedals that are named and marketed as metal pedals, but they are great for non-metal sounds. It doesn't deter me from buying them, but it's just a bit silly considering the other stuff they are on the board with. I got a Boss HM-2 a few years back, and not to use it for metal. Rats used to be associated with metal/80's hair metal, so lotsa folks would equate it with only those sounds. That never deterred me from getting one though. I've actually tried to avoid gear with a signature name. It always seems kind of trite for that reason. If the signature can be kept super small on the pedal, that's not so bad. Or if initials can be used, that helps. I've played some "Hendrix Strats" that were cool, but just couldn't be the owner of one. Even if the Satchurator was the coolest thing in the world (to me), I couldn't bring myself to get one. It seems that more often, there is a "hot pedal of the year" or "hot pedal of the summer," and it's unappealing to me to own one, because I don't subscribe to the notion of being a mindless victim of branding. The word victim is actually inappropriate, and I'm not just this way with pedals. It's like a "I've got a iPhone 4 - you've got to get one!" kind of thing. Or any gizmo that the masses ended up embracing because of some big advertising campaign. All of this said, I've bought pedals because of who makes them, so I guest that is part of the name. I've bought pedals by ProCo, EHX, Barber, Subdecay, Crowther, Reverend, Boss, MXR, and others for this reason. But never for the name by itself. Doesn't seem like much in the way of making an informed purchase.

A friend of mine bought a Bad Monkey, just because of the name. He bought me one too and they're pretty good!

I bought an Orange Squeezer type compressor from this seller
http://www.etsy.com/shop/podals?ref=exp_listing Because it was called "SQUEEZEY" and that's such a cute name. My girlfriend loves it. It's a little noisy though. |

And I don't like admitting it, myself. But there it is. Another peeve is when the company name has the words "audio," "technologies," or my favorite, "engineering" in it, and I know that the folks at the company (as talented as they might be) simply have no formal training/certification/education that IMO grants them the right to put that in the name. But it's not illegal, so if the casual consumer doesn't care, then I guess it's irrelevant.
...I think some of these companies like having names like that so they can transition into whatever else they want to do as well, like start making amps or something. I prefer it when (many) companies apply some specialization - Ibanez has mainly stuck to guitars and pedals, for instance. I'm typically not impressed w/amp companies that end up making pedals, or vice versa. I think Marshall is one of the few exceptions.

Call me shallow, but I bought an OD pedal simply because it said "Wampler" and "Paisley" on it. I love Wampler's stuff and Brad's basic sound.
Turns out, it was a good decision. On my small giging pedal board, there's room for 6 small pedals, and I've tried a host of other OD pedals to pair with the Paisley Drive -- pedals by Barber, Vox and FullTone; a Sparkle Drive, and all things Wampler: Tweed '57, Blackface '65, Ecstacy (now Euphoria), the Hot Wired (too big). Guess what other OD pedal shares the board with the Paisley today? Of course, another Paisley! I set one to "a bit of hair" and another to "crunch" and then layer them if I need even more. Sometimes you can judge a book (or a pedal) by it's cover.... |
