MHP 72 - what to expect

Just won the MHP 72 on eBay. What can I expect from this pedal. All the reviews are positive

A solid overdrive that lives up to the hype. Low to mid gain OD and every knob is useful. This pedal isn't a one trick pony.

And when you open it up and look inside you're going to see the cleanest neatest assembly and soldering work that you've ever seen.....mine is freakishly better than any other pedal that I own. It's really something when you take the back off and look inside.

Congratulations.

I agree. You can tell that MHP takes pride in what they do.

If there were ONE pedal that you would say the 72 Degree is most similar to, which would it be?

I don't have many od pedals to compare it to, but a can get the 72 to sound similar to low gain settings on my Biyang Mouse in normal mode.

Nothing out there quite like it - the 72 is an original circuit design. it is not a clone of nor is it based on anything that I know of. Yes, you probably can get it to sound somewhat like other pedals, but why? It's a cool, quality, usable overdrive pedal all by itself.

As has already been said, it's a low to medium gain pedal. I'll add that it is not transparent, as it always has a slight coloring/enhancement to your tone even at low gain settings. And, it's pretty flat EQ-wise. That means it may not be for everyone.

All three knobs are fully functional across their entire sweeps.

I don't know why you'd want to make it sound like another pedal either - I was wonder what the 72 sounded most like.

I hold the Galaxy mod BD-2 and Boss OD-3 among my two favorites. The OD-3 doesn't go all the way clean either, and is a bit colored. The modded BD-2 does go all the way clean, and and is a tad bright. It sounds like the 72 may fit squarely between them.

The easy thing about clones is that you can say it sounds like X, or it sounds like X but with more/less Z. And, since most dirt pedals out there are clones or variations on a tube screamer theme, it's easy to make comparisons.

The hard thing about original circuit designs is that you have no frame of reference for comparison purposes. When the Klon Centaur originally came out, there was nothing before it to compare it to. Same with the Zen Drive and some others, including the 72 Degrees.

Yes, I can get my 72 to sound like a BD-2 or an OD-3, but that's just with certain specific tweaks of the control dials as well as my guitar and amp settings. But does it really sound like either pedal across the full range of what it can do - no.

To my ear, there are three things that make the 72 stand out: (1) the nice, subtle coloration of your tone at all settings; (2) the relatively flat EQ - if you're used to TS-type pedals, you may initially feel that there is a little too much bass; and (3) the dynamics of the pedal - hard to put in words, but the same lick played through each of my dirt pedals always sounds best through the 72.

Hope that helps.

Shouldn't you have asked this question before you bought it?

I would suggest that everyone looking for a new od purchase one of these. If you are not looking for a new od but see a 72 on ebay, pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

Or you could just buy one from the creator/inventor/builder guy like I did.

His name is Keith. He helps out here on the Tele forum with tons of great information and advice. Hell of a nice guy. You can buy from the guy who makes it.

Nice Pair!

That is a beautifully traced board. Original hand design evident.

I really like mine, though I haven't had near as much time to put it through all of its paces as I would like to. I play mostly rhythm so I'm not a huge TS fan and the MHP 72 works great for what I use it for.

It's actually a 1970 Bassman head built into a 2x10 custom combo with Celestion Vintage 30's. A sweet ride, so to speak.

Great, great pedal. However, I think I’m over OD. Going to post this bad boy in the classifieds. Got to feed my pedal addiction!
