Everyone stop what you're doing and locate your nearest EP Booster!
Seriously. Best $120 or so I've ever spent on a pedal, probably. With a Tele, it's a no-brainer. Does a great job of fattening things up ever so slightly. It's a great always-on pedal to put in the front of a pedalboard, or even by itself into the amp. I run mine with the knob all the way down, which is just a slight bump over unity, and it's amazing how much better I've felt about my sound and playing the last few gigs with it.
I never, ever thought I'd find something that does this slight boost/sweetening thing as well or better than my Klon for anything but stupid money, but it turns out I was wrong. And now I get to use my Klon as a solo boost instead of an always-on clean boost, which is an added bonus.

Looks like my board, which also has a Klon (almost the exact same settings) and an EP Booster (knob turned all the way off). Love 'em both. Nowadays the EP Booster is the one to get. Affodrable, simple and it sounds great!

That's not too hard to do, they generally have them at Guitar Center even.
Great pedal, the only one I use--but I have tried it with some different ODs and it worked very well with each of them. It just occurred to me one day, "Wait a minute, I don't really need an OD, the EP Booster is fine by itself!"

Already did. Then I sold it.
I wasn't anywhere near as taken with the EP boost as others. I've since built two versions of the Madbean Fat Pants EP pre-amp style booster. The FP is what I was hoping the EP would have been. Now back to your program already in progress. |

Dr. Pants and I are on the same page. It was kind of a "Meh Experience" after all of the hype.

I haven't tried the EP, just because it's more money thatn I'll spend for a non-exssential. I built a Fat Pants with a 3-position EQ switch.

Had one of the early models, and sold it. I wanted to use it for a solo boost, but even with the knob at minimum, it was too much of a volume bump.
The newer ones will do unity gain at minimum settings, so I picked up another one. I'm enjoying it a lot more now. Later...

How does it work with humbuckers?

I have a bunch of different guitars (gibson/gretsch/fender/prs)....it doesn't seem to make a difference. They all sound better. It's a high frequency response thing...the EP seems to take wool off your signal and make it crystal clear....but not in a harsh way.
So, I use mine for a slight boost to add clarity. There may be difference between single coils/humbuckers when using it for a higher level of gain. |

Most single JFET boosters will do the same thing. I built a kit from General Guitar Gadgets of a Stratoblaster booster and it does the exact same thing as the EP booster as far as my ears can tell. The kit is only $38 but you must build it yourself but it was a relatively simple and quick build.

Unless you play through a VERY bright amp, I'd say no. I had v2.0 of the EP Booster and even with the treble boost internal dip switch "on", the pedal added too much bass to my P90 Les Paul (into a Hot Rod Deluxe) this was with the external knob set around 9 o'clock. It adds a really nice 3D shimmer to teles and if I had the Hot Rod working with the bright switch "on" and the bass rolled back to around 9 o'clock, the EP Booster was great.
I returned mine, doesn't couldn't deal with the bass boost...if they would give you the option to limit the bass boost, this would be a really cool pedal. I emailed Xotic and asked if version 1 would be better as it has an internal switch for bass boost on/off. I was told, no, version 2.0 is designed as having the bass boost "off". So....a bright Vox or fender black/silver faced amp and a thinner sounding tele/strat...this would be a great pedal. imho |
