Yeah, I feel like I used to have a lot more to say in this forum.

Although we seemingly have hundreds of more choices, particularly with respect to dirt boxes, and all of the so-called improvements of modern technology, there are very few pedals that aren't somewhat derivative of those old classics. If we eliminate all of the dirt pedals that are in some fundamental way based on the DS-1, TS808 and TS9, Rat, Fuzz Face, Big Muff, DOD 250, MXR D+, and the many variations of BSIAB, Marshall/Plexi Stack, etc., there are only a handful of original stompbox designs left. Nothing wrong with a clone, but if you want something different, you really don't have to look too hard - there just aren't that many.

What are you guys talking about? You've only been here a little bit longer than me! It's the same ol' awesome Stompbox forum that it's always been!
If you want to discuss(insert Dr. Pants' pedal makers list here) then start some threads, I could talk about this stuff all day long! |

It does seem that the Rat (an oldie but goodie) and it's clones have had a good 2012 (on Stompbox) so far...
there has been a lot of Rat discovery, re-discovery- so that's cool! * but it seems like now we are in the "Is the Chinese clone pedal, worse/as good as/better than it's boutique or popular counterpart?" era, so I think that that has been a kind of cool communal 'interactive' phenom that probably would never happen w/o Stompbox (and associated tools like YouTube, audio clips, photos- but mainly conversation!) edit: speaking of, Where's 11 Gauge?

Joe summed it up in toto, to use legalese.
And yet when I think of pedals that are non-derivative, what immediately comes to mind are the BD-2 (which I'm not a fan of) and the OD-3. And from a mass production company, no less. I mean, I really love Dave Barber's pedals, but I think everything he does, but they all build on existing designs it seems. But where he proves himself apart from the pack is that he makes *NO* ridiculous claims, nor does he resort to goofy marketing (the Mayer-naise Driver!) and his prices are reasonable, affordable paired to very high quality. But yet, I favor Boss, and other mass produced pedals, with few exceptions. And yes, I think Joyo, Biyang and the other Chinese companies are a shot fired across the bow of our domestic product's ship. |

Regardless of what you think about the outrageous hype and prices of the Klon Centaur, Finnegan was pretty creative with his design back in the mid-90's. Same for Tripp with his Red Llama, even though it was based on Craig Anderton's Tube Sound Fuzz circuit as no one had produced a commercial stompbox using it until Tripp did so. Hermida and Machine Head Pedals also come to mind as pedal makers who aren't doing the same old thing over and over again. And there are certainly others.
