How many run your Dirt via input and time based via FX Loop?

I have always just ran all my pedals in front of my amp going straight into the input.

I was just wondering if you guys run all your pedals upfront into the input or if you run your compressor/overdrives/distortions into the input of the amp and than run your chorus/tremolos/delays and or reverbs via the fx loop. Any pluses or negatives either way??

I run them all straight in... of course, I play a Vox without an effects loop. Most of the great vintage tones that people are always trying to cop were made the same way. Hendrix didn't have an effects loop. Neither did May or Gilmour for that matter. All these cats used their fair share of effects too.

well, time based effects should go into the loop, that is what the loop was created for. however, people like me, have found that parallel loops don't exactly play nice with stompboxes. phasing problems.......so I run everything in front of the amp.

as long as the amp is fairly clean, effects work well in front. you get a "bigger" sound with the effects in the loop, but in a band setting that is hardly noticable.

anyway, compressors, dirt boxes, and the like go in front and delays, chorus, or time based effects generally are better in the loop.

Mine goes dirt>Loop>Volume>time/modulation>Loop return. I like the volume pedal there (it's active) to keep my gain level pretty much intact regardless of volume. That way I can play with significant amounts of gain during or under a quieter song.
