I am not a huge delay fan, I've only used a friend's Boss Delay a handful of times for recording or live playing as an experiment, but one pedal that has come up that I think I could bond with is the Malekko Ekko 616 lo-fi delay.
Does anybody have one of these, and also, does anybody know if they are going to be reproduced anytime in the forseeable future? |

I picked up a Wampler Faux Analog Delay and was shocked by how much I liked it. I can't explain what makes it different, but for reason it sounds much better to me than my Boss DD-6, which is no slouch.

Except for the "tap tempo", at this price level I'd suggest TC Electronics Flashback.
Instead of "tap tempo" where you tap a switch with your foot, it's got "strum tempo" where you hold down the switch with your foot and strum at the tempo you want. If that mechanism is OK with you, then the TCE Flashback is a candidate. It's also got a mildly-detented 11-position switch for selecting different kinds of delays (useful for experimentation, but I'm guessing it would be a little finicky on-stage) and a switch for the popular dotted-8ths stuff. As someone suggested, ProGuitarShop has a minor variant with a slightly different set of delay types than the standard Flashback. I have no opinion on which is better. Disclaimer - I own a TCE Flashback. I think it's pretty good at what it does (and it does a lot), it sounds good to me, but I recognize that it's a little fussy in the control area, which for me precludes a lot of fine adjustment on-stage. It's a good value for money, IMO. If you need a lot of control and a lot of adjustment on stage, you can get that - but not for the cited budget. You'd probably want something like the TimeLine with its presets. |

Boss DD-20 Giga delay.. all the wayy!
There are so many things you can do with it...I especially like how you can plug in an external pedal that can control the settings, while you use the pedal for tap! |

For analog delays I really like the Carbon Copy, except it has no tap tempo which is a must for me. As far as digital delays go I really liked the TC Electronic Nova Repeater which is a stripped down and simpler version of the Nova Delay. More user friendly than the Flashback and not as glitchy. I've recently been trying out the Visual Sound Dual Tap Delay and I'm digging it quite a bit. Basically two delays in one pedal, you can layer delays U2 style and use the tap tempo switch to synchronise them. Sounds really good. Very tweakable too, but it's downside is that it takes up a good bit of space on your pedalboard.

I've only had it for a week but I'm really enjoying my Carbon Copy but it doesn't sound like what you need. Boss delay pedals feature tap tempo but I find their tone sterile.

My vote: EH Stereo Memory Man. It's next on my list. I have an MXR Carbon Copy, which is awesome - no tap though. What I really want is the reverse. Neat-o!

I used my new Flashback last night on the gig and the jury is still out. I've used a Carbon Copy for a few years now I must say that I missed CC's bucket-brigade mojo that even the Tape, Analog, etc. settings on the Flashback don't obtain.
The tap feature on the Flashback was cumbersome (mutes your signal far too long to set for me) and though it has many features and settings, I don't have the luxury of frequently bending down and changing the knobs and switches during performance. I'll try the Flashback one more time tonight, then if I'm still underwhelmed I'll put the CC back on the board. |

I was in the same situation as you. Must have tap tempo and all the other useful features, but I went out and bought an MXR Carbon Copy. It was definetly better in the end. I might get a DD-3 to go along with it, ut you don't realy need tap tempo. You can use your foot to control the delay time. Tap tempo would be easier, but your foot works just fine. If you must have tap tempo though, the Boss DD-7 is a good choice. It has all the great features and an analog simulation. I'll stick with my CC though.
