Vox Treble Booster
I got one when I was about 15, so that would have been around 1967. Here's some info:
http://www.voxshowroom.com/us/misc/treb_boost.html Interestingly enough, Grin's first bass player, George Daly, modified at least one of the later models of these units, calling it the "Daly Moan Tone," and Nils Logren had it mounted on the TELE he used during the mid-to-late 60s. With the modification, it was the first real overdrive unit I ever heard. (Sounded good, too!) :-) Sometime shortly after that I got a Maestro Fuzz Tone, (cool pic here: http://www.answers.com/topic/fuzzbox ) the original "box of angry bees." ;-) CS

MXR Distortion +
They were the pedal to get when I was starting out. One could be had used for $25-$30-. This was in the early/mid '80s. I've been meaning to pick one up again.

Ibanez TS-9, and a Crybaby. Picked them on the same day. My brother was pissed because I sounded WAY more like Guns N Roses than he did.
Up until that time, I pretty much only played acoustic. On the rare occasion that I picked up an electric, I plugged straight in and tried to play as clean as possible. But I ended up playing ryhtym guitar in my band. (I had previously just been the singer, no guitar). I needed a "rawk" sound. Jake

i got what i am guessing is a MXR phase 90 that had all the paint removed from it. The guy claimed it was homemade (hee hee) it was early 1980s i was a kid. This guy was a druggy that had a tongue like a lizard and was a wicked player. I used to sit outside his house and listen to him wail. Later that year i got a MXR distortion+ Later on i got an MXR env. follower, (still have that!) and a compressor (i didn't even know what that one did) and a TS9 Tube screamer and a HUGE flanger that i had to like jump on with 2 feet and it would make crazy swooshing noises. I used it to play the opening to 'Spirit of the Radio' by Rush (blah! I always hated them!) in the school gym when i was like 17... everyone was like 'wow' ... but my amp was a Baldwin! (i also had a champ) and i had a fender musicmaster.
hee hee. of all them cool old pedals i only have the TS 9 and the env. follower. I wish i had the Distortion+.... That was *THE* pedal to have back then.... -k |

My first pedal was a Dunlop Crybaby, circa 1986. I used that Crybaby for years...probably 10 years...before the switch went out. I gave it to a friend who like to mod pedals. He put a new switch in it, and he's used it for the past 10 years!
My second pedal was a new Ibanez TS10, just a few months after the Crybaby. I used only those two pedals for a while, then in 1989 I got a Dunlop Rotovibe and a Boss DS-1. Quote:

Didn't get my first pedal until 1983.
I bought a Ross Phasor. The black one. Kept it until around 1999. Wish I still had it, now. :(

In the late 70s-early 80s I bought a
Big Muff (which never worked right and I hated for it)
Ibanez SD9 distortion (which I still use and enjoy a lot) Ibanez PT9 phaser (which I don't use much, but is fun) More recently (90s-today) I got a Boss CE2 chorus (which I use every Sunday in church) Soundtank DD (which has short, spacey echo) Guyatone MD3 (much longer and I just got it) I'm working on a wah pedal and overdrive, but there are so many choices I may never get around to buying them!

BIG MUFF PI . I never seen one like it, it was twice the size of a normal one. I had a boost or compressor on it, two switches and 6 knobs.

Kind of embarassed to admit it, but I my first pedal was a Bad Monkey OD a couple of months ago. Great pedal! Have since got a Daddy-O OD, also wonderful, a Holy Grail reverb and a DD-3 delay (which I just traded in towards a Epi Les Paul). Really thinking about getting a Dan Echo, though this pedal thing should stop as it gets pretty addictive, not to mention I should just sit down and play the dang guitar and get better without using a net.

'67 or '68, got Vox Tone Bender at Wallich's Music City, Sunset & Vine, Hollywood.
'68 or '69, got a Vox Cry Baby at Wallich's. Sometime later, LPB-1 when first introduced. Best boost ever. The LPB-1 into the Tone Bender was divine. Still have all of them. |

Going back to Slim's era - late 60s/early 70s - can't remember dates exactly (strange, some of the memory gaps from those days - wonder why
1. Arbiter Fuzz Face 2. Vox Cry Baby 3. Vox Treble Booster 4. Vox Distortion Booster 5. Triumph T-100 (solid state 100W combo - size of an average fridge but heavier) amp - one of the first with built-in FX - it only had fuzz, reverb and some sort of delay thingy. I used it on I think 3 album tracks and then sold it on - a nasty brush with early solid state - but it had a slashing acidic sound with Strat bridge pup that was dead right for these 3 tracks. But was I glad to get back to my trusty AC30! Now I stick to modelling processors - I like the Zoom GRX series best, I think.
