A thread to sum up Joyo pedals pros/cons

Hi,

With the new Joyo pedals coming out these days I thought it might be good to have a thread with opinions on the whole Joyo pedal range. Here's my take with the 2 pedals I have:

- Ultimate Drive: I've used it into a Vox AC15C1 and find it's the best mid to high gain pedal I've ever used. The sound can be either aggressive (in the good sense of the word) or warm. Nothing negative to say. I love it!

- AC Tone: I've used it both into my AC15C1 and direct to a Bose L1 PA. In both cases it is very versatile and sounds good. When the gain is pushed high it is a bit noisy though. I can compare the sound in the PA with the sound of my AC15 and it's really close. I recommend this pedal.

I have the vintage od (808 clone) I think for $40 or even more, its worth it. What I dont like is the graphics on other joyo peds and when you stomp on them they feel like Way Huge pedals. It feels like theyre hollow or something like that. I havent tried any other joyos but the V.OD is pretty nice.

That's funny...I feel the same about the Way Huge stuff...feels like it's a big empty box.

Check out the inside of an NYC Muff. That sucker is a HUGE box for a little board.

I just ordered an ultimate drive, tremolo, delay and the voodoo. They should be here in a few days. I'll do reviews when I get them.

Seriously, it makes me wonder how it still outsells the Little Big Muff

I have the Vintage Overdrive and the Korg Pitchblack copy. The tuner does everything it's supposed to. I can't find any reason to spend about twice the money on a Korg Pitchblack, unless you like the slightly prettier lights on it that much.

The Vintage Overdrive is excellent. There may be better TS-style pedals out there, but this is a quality one at an extremely low price. It's hard to go wrong with it.

As more and more of this stuff goes to SMT, that is how it will be.

Most pedal circuits are just really simple, at least compared to 99% of other electronics, even other audio electronics.

While the WHE stuff still has traditional circuitboards for the effect itself, they all have SMT relay bypass switching. It also allows for a momentary switch that doesn't have the tactile feel of the old mechanical true bypass ones (right or wrong).

So I guess it's just a matter of time until the WHE are 100% SMT. I think it's inevitable, to keep lowering the prices.

Someone mentioned that the latest revision of Joyo pedals now has SMT componentry. So think of it like having the equivalent of 3% of the circuitry that is in the sound card in your computer. The "main crowding" on the Joyo PCB will be the pots, jacks, and footswitch. You could probably fit ALL of the circuit components inside the footswitch if you gutted it.

+1 on the AC Tone - the crunch setting are just superb, but cranked it's pretty damned noisy. Still useable. I may consider getting some of the other Tech 21 clones.

I have the Crunch Distortion, which I'm really pleased with. I was after an 80s rock/cranked Marshall sound, and that's pretty much what you get. Top bang for the bucks, and quite good fun just to fiddle around with.

From what I've heard from builders, they usually move away from there if possible, because of extremely high production costs of all sorts.

Look at the BJFE/Mad Professor pedals from a neighbor country. And now think as to why Bearfoot is manufacturing them locally under license.

That's kinda what I had heard as well. My family descends from Norway, so I teased the idea of getting some type of pedal from over there just for kicks. I haven't seen very much though.

With SMT becoming the new wave...it sounds like pedal manufacturers should be combining two pedals into one enclosure perhaps?

I know that "This1sMYNE" does it all the time for regular pedals but maybe the industry should follow his lead...?

I have two Joyo pedals on my board, the Tremolo and Digital Delay. I have to say, I like them and *use them* a lot! For the money, they can't be beat. At twice the price I paid, I still would have considered them very reasonably priced.

I'm wondering how close the Ultimate Drive is to an OCD. Anybody A/B them?

Yeah, they should have better designs like the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt which gained popularity after attracting ironic reviews on Amazon.com attributing great power to it such as being irresistible to women, striking fear into other males and having magical healing abilities.
these are all attributes of the Joyo Ulitimate Drive (which I have).
the only downside is the missing Three Wolves design
otherwise, great pedal indeed.
