A Tale of Two 72 Degrees Pedals

I purchased a 72 Degrees overdrive pedal almost a year ago from Keith at Machine Head Pedals. Pedals have come and gone on my pedal board but the "72" has been there since I got it. The singular best light-medium od pedal I've ever owned.

Well, last week a jam buddy of mine, who has played through my 72, found out he was going on tour to Europe, and he only had room to take one pedal with him. So he talked me into selling him my 72, which I did.

The I panicked - no 72 on my board! So I emailed Keith and ordered a replacement, but asked him to put it in the distressed aluminum box he is now using for his new Raw pedal.

Just got it today and it looks really cool. It'll be back in its place on my board tonight and all will be good again. My panic attack is over!

I have yet to try one of these. One of these days...

I haven't heard of anybody not liking one yet. I really need to give one a spin.

That's cool. Looks rugged. I like the school bus yellow but that's just taste.

Have you ever looked at the board in you 72?

Have you looked at the board closely?

It's like art. I looked at the board in mine and thought whoa!

Whoa! That is indeed what I thought. Cleanest pedal work that I've seen.

I took macro photos just because it looked so cool. Contests on the gun metal 72.

Keith's craftmanship is as good as it gets. But the tone, oh the tone! Not a clone of anything.

The first time I played out with mine, the guitarist next to me was playing some high-end PRS into 3 Landgraff pedals into some high-end Mesa. I was playing my Tele into the 72 into my Bassman. He couldn't believe how much better I sounded (at a fraction of what he paid, I was thinking!), and he sounded pretty good.

My tone quest has been over for a long time. I haven't changed a pedal on my board in about 18 months. And I really have no desire to. I have the sound that's always been in my head. I'm done unless the sound in my head changes.

I just want to try one. I think from everything I've read about them, I'd enjoy having one in the collection. And I like Keith. I've interacted with him here on the page, and via PM and Email in the past, always a pleasure. I like doing business with people I like.

No it certainly isn't, but I suspect
we'll be seeing the 72 in a Wampler
pedal near you, coming soon.

Or maybe not. We'll see.

Unlike many small-builder pedals, you don't see many (if any) MHP pedals on the resale/secondary market since most of us owners won't give them up. It's all there - original design, masterful quality and gig-worthy sturdiness, tone tone tone, cool graphics (without being Joyo silly) and pedal board friendly. Oh, and did I mention tone?

Just loaned my RAW to a friend who gigs regularly. Now I'm considering a 72 Degrees in the interim.

I'm tempted...

How do you like the Raw pedal and what kind of music do you use it for?

I am really intrigued by this question. The comparison of the two is a frequent query. I don't think I do a good job of answering them.

IMO, there are 3 guitarists that pop into my brain when I hear the Raw - Roy Buch, Malcolm Young (earlier AC/DC with the cleanest of his tones), and Ritchie Blackmore. Actually, there is a 4th - Freddie King. But obviously none of them use(d) it, so personal observations/impressions would be better.

I'm torn between getting the RAW or the 72.
I've loved the 72 since I heard it...perfect for those Hendrix tones i'm looking for.
But the RAW seems to be higher up in the gain range...

I dunno..so torn...

I don't have a 72

But I intend to get one this year sometime. Keith is a good guy, He fixed my Frantone pedal for me and I highly recommend his services.

I may not be the best person to go into a lot of detail on the pedal. I play mostly rhythm and I really like it. It doesn't color the tone of the amp much at all (if any) and all of the notes stay very defined when playing double stops, partial, or full chords. At the same time, raw is a good term for the sound because it stays so clear. My friend played with it for about 5 minutes at the house and loved it. I loaned it to him and he gigged it on the weekend being able to dial it in that quickly for the 5-6 songs he used it on.

I play mostly classic pop/rock and obviously don't use it on everything, but I mostly use it to make it sound like my BF Fenders when they're on the edge of crunch/breakup only at lower volumes. It's very good at sounding pretty much just like my amp when it's driven to this point, but at just about any volume level. It can go beyond that level, too, but I don't really use it like that. It never gets mushy and the tone control works through the whole range.

I just popped for a 72 Degrees this morning.

There you go again.

Did Brian turn you down for a date or something once...? That's the only reason I can find for you constantly slamming his company every chance you get.

Come on then, what is it. Why do you take a petty swipe at Wampler Pedals every chance you get..?

Dr Pants, I have no idea why you keep slamming me. I'd like you to call me so when can talk about it. 765-352-8626.

There is no reason on earth why I would put the '72' circuitry inside one of our pedals. Ridiculous. I do have one, but that's because I'm a guitarist first and foremost, and I'd heard good things about them. I wanted to try one. I agree, it's a good pedal.

Seriously- call me and let's cut this BS out.

-Brian
