Amp Modelers as FX Pedals...

I'm still a firm believer in single pedals on a pedal board, but for my smaller second board I have for practice, I've started using amp modelers for the effects section.

I never really thought of doing this. I've tried to using the amp modeler as the only unit into the amp, but did not care for the sound.

So what I've done is turned off the amp models, which allows the effects, delays and reverb to work. I run a DynaComp into my favorite Tubeulator overdrive pedal and then into a switch box that cuts the amp modeler in and out as needed.

I've tried it with my J-Station, that sounds awesome, and now I'm using my V-Amp 2. The J-Station has an advantage because you can change banks with the footswitch, the V-Amp you can only change channels within a bank.

I've also programmed presets with just the effects minus the amp models.
It works really well, I get the great sound of my DRRI and I can easily switch effects and tweak them with the knobs.

So I'm selling off some of my duplicate pedals on my practice pedal board, and just keeping my main board full of pedals.

Since I've not recorded for a long time, my modelers where just sitting around, now I can put them to good use!

I toyed with that idea with my ToneLab LE, but was never thrilled with the results. Sold it and bought some stompboxes. Much happier now, with tone I've been after for 20+ years.

I'm toying with it.
Zoom G3.
Its better than I thought it could possibly be.
(I'd only bought it as a DI and for the Looper)

While I'm sticking with the CMATMods Butah and the '95 RAT - for now - all my modulation effects are now via the G3 (I have it in a bypass loop - though it really does not suck tone).

The Zoom G3 has a number of Amp Models , several of which are truly outstanding.
The Fender Blackface, the Bassman, the Orange all very, very nice indeed ..but man .. the JTM45 and especially the TwoRock. Goooood. real Gooood!

Anyway yah .. 'Zoom' .. I know, I know .. but the models are actually pretty goo .. ah .. OK .. I'll save my breath for now ...

I'm not using any amp models, just the effects sections.
I can't stand the sound of any amp models into an amp.
Amp models into my DRRI is just a waste.

Just to clarify, I'm only using it for effects. I have an MXR DynaComp into a Tubeulartor OD pedal, then into a bypass box. Then switching in the effects as needed.

The modeler alone can't handle it, but as the modulation section, it works pretty well.

I tried the amp models into my DRRI, and it sounds like junk, just like it did on my previous amps. But my Tubeulator sounds FABULOUS!. So why mess with it by adding in amp models.

My pedalboard is sort of a hybrid. I use stompboxes for compression, overdrive/distortion and EQ, because I hate the sound of those things modeled. However, I don't mind modeling at all for things like delay, reverb, phaser, flanger, chorus, tremolo, vibrato, rotating speaker. So, my board right now has this layout:

Compressor -> Paisley Drive -> Blues Driver -> Green Screamer -> Digitech RP255 -> EQ -> Looper/Sampler

Seems to be the best of both worlds, analog and digital.

In my case I just decided to use amp models and run straight into the mixer. Now I know what I hear is the same as what's being recorded.

I've tried direct into the board before, and I did not care for it.
Just never sounded right. What models sounded great in my headphones sounded really bad through the board.

It ended up that the only model that sounded ok was the Marshall Stack, which is a model I never use when play with head phones or recording.
