Just got a DOD Milkbox... the first compressor I've liked. I suspect the 'Hi Ex' knob is what does it for me, it's a touch-sensitive expander on the treble end that makes it snappier and twangier than most comps. It can be noisy at higher comp settings, but light-to-medium squish is plenty for me.
And it's cheap, of course.

Another vote for the DOD FX84 Milk Box (the one with the plain white paint and no stupid labels on the knobs; not the one with the cow graphics and indecipherable knob labels). It's good, cheap, and reliable. A lot of well-respected reviewers claim that it's better than compressors that cost four times as much (e.g. http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/milkbox.shtml). I don't know about that, as I've never spent that much for a compressor. But, the Milk Box does its job and does it *very* well. What more could you ask for?

Carl Martin, Barber Tone Press, and Dyna Comp.
Depends on the gig. I bought the CM in the 90's and I have never had a single problem with the electronics. I did have to replace the chord last fall.

I'm using a seymour duncan doubleback, and I'm a bit surprised, actually. For what I want - moderate added sustain and levelling, without pumping or coloration - I've found the doubleback to be excellent.
I've owned 10 or so comps over the last couple years, and there are some I'd still like to try, but I'm so happy with the SD doubleback that I've ceased my compressor quest. Great sleeper pedal IMO. |
