Biyang Fuzz or Big Muff?

I've never had a fuzz pedal, but love the sound. I was thinking about getting a Big Muff since they're fairly cheap, but came across the Biyang Fuzz pedal online for around $50. Anyone here have one and can comment on the sound and quality? I've never heard of that company before.

Looking for a Fuzz pedal is almost as time consuming as swapping out your pickups for new ones. There are many types of Fuzz pedals and fuzz sounds out there. I'd recommend trying to find songs where you like the fuzz tones and then trying to find out what the guitarist is playing. On youtube, thegearmandude does some great reviews.

That being said, the Big Muff is a good value and worth getting just get your self started. I know nothing about the Biyang fuzz other than the quality may be questionable.

I've had lots and lots of fuzz pedals over the years, but I have found my Holy Grail! Dano French Toast, based off the Foxx Tone Machine. Got it for $10 at Best Buy, but they normally go for @$30 (Musician's Freind, Sweetwater, etc.). Octave switch, or you can leave it off , Plastic enclosure, but it is a hard plastic.

+1 on the French Toast/Foxx Tone Machine. I built mine from the General Guitar Gadgets kit, which has the option of making the octave footswitchable. Great pedal.

But definitely get a Big Muff too! Everybody needs a Big Muff.

I did a ton of fuzz research a few months back, and while the videos might help rule some things out if it's clear they are a totally different kind of fuzz from what you want, they won't help with similar pedals. For that you need to actually experience them in person.

But for <$50, why no take a chance!

I can't comment directly on the Biyang Fuzz, but I do own (and gig with) the Biyang Mad Driver OD (from the small Baby Boom Series), which is a Tube Screamer copy with 3-way toggle switch/clipping options. It's very well-built, nice looking, sounds like a TS- $55 shipped...I'm going to try out their Phase Shifter soon

Get the Biyang Baby Boom Fuzz Star!

It IS a Big Muff! I have one and verified it.

Everything about the Fuzz Star makes it the best "Muff per dollar," period. The bypass switching is good, the component quality is good, and it comes in the size of a MXR box. What's not to like?

I wouldn't even consider getting ANY new EHX Muff versus the Fuzz Star, period.

I modded my Fuzz Star to make it more like a cross between a Skreddy Pig Mine and Cornish G-2, and posted about it in this thread.
