Barber Tone Press
I need a compressor. I'd like one that is clean and has TBP. I am really impressed with the other Barber pedals i have heard. Anyone try the Barber Tone Press? Seems like the blender would be a cool thing to have.... I just wonder beyond features if this is a qulity box, or of there are alternatives to consider for quality clean compression, that won't break the bank. I have an old DOD and and ampex pedal. Both are truly garbage and it is time for an upgrade!

Best compressor on the market
Although I no longer use a compressor, the Tone Press was the best I ever used. The "blend" feature is what makes this compressor so useful. You can dial in the amount of compression you like with the clean tone. You can also use the TP like a boost.

I have two compressor pedals -- a Tone Press and a Maxon pedal. The Tone Press is the more transparent of the two. You don't really know it is on until you turn it off. The blend feature is excellent. It really helps retain the true tone of the guitar and amp.
The Maxon pedal has its own charm, but it is hardly transparent. In fact, when I plug a Tele into it, and play clean, it cannot help but give me a Hellecasters sound. Now, that can be pretty cool, but it certainly does color the sound. |

Question on the Tone Press
The Tone Press is on my current radar screen, also. I have a question for those with some experience with it.
When you turn the Blend knob up or down, does it change the overall output level or does the output remain constant and just the ratio (direct vs. compressed) change? Or maybe this changes based on how the other two knobs are set? Also, in comparisons with the Guyatone ST2 (which has just fixed switch for bringing the direct signal in or out). Buying used, the Guyatone is typically less than half the price of the Barber. Thanks.

alternative
I've got one of the Guyatone mini pedal compressors, ST2 I think it's called, it has a clean blend feature like the Barber, not adustable though.
For the money it's a great pedal IMO, used around $40-50. The Tonepress is a great unit albeit a bit subtle, too subtle for my tastes, YMMV. |

the blend control
The blend control is great:
It is like a level control for the amount of compression versus your plain signal. All the way to the left, no compression, all plain signal. All the way to the right, All compressor, no plain signal. Plus you have a volume and compression knob just like every other compressor. Hence, the pedal can be used as a boost pedal as well! Great product, buy it. |
