PROVIDENCE Stampede Overdrive SOV-2

PROVIDENCE Stampede Overdrive SOV-2

Anyone else here have one of these or ever play through one? They describe it as a Very Robben Ford type pedal.

Quote:
The Stampede OD is used by Robben Ford, Carl Verheyen, Matt Schofield, Ramon Goose, and more!

" This is a fantastic overdrive pedal! Very rich and thick, with a really great responsive and dynamic feel to pick attack... " Matt Schofield

- The Providence SOV-2 Stampede OD pedal is designed to deliver natural overdrive without obscuring the inherent characteristics and tone of the guitar being used. It features a special bipolar power supply that powers the internal circuitry with ±15 volts, providing more than three times the dynamic range of conventional 9-volt powered overdrives. For singing lead tones and solid, chunky rhythms, there’s nothing like the SOV-2 Stampede OD.

If you like Robben Ford and you are searching for the best natural Overdrive, the SOV-2 is for you!

I have a Two Rock studio 22 on order and I'm just looking at a bunch of different pedals and I have it narrowed down to about 5. This is the only one I havn't tried personally. Its also the most expensive at $250 . I'm a firm believer you shouldn't need a $300+ pedal to make a good amp sound good.
But this pedal is intriquing me. One think I find interesting......2 hour battery life. Not a big issue because it will be used on a board , but dang......2 hours?

Who here has checked one out? Thanks!

I tend to agree, unless it's something like a killer analog delay.

That said, the Providence stuff is REALLY good, IMO. Good design and performance. Hard to go wrong with that, unless you just don't bond with the voicing or some other characteristic that is specific to really any pedal.

It is the 15VDC "charge pump" that is the internal circuit that is the cause of that. It takes 9VDC and jumps it up w/o the need for anything other than a standard power source. But, no free lunch - 2 hours on a battery.

The battery thing shouldn't be a deal breaker for two reasons IMO:

1. Batteries (disposable) are bad for the environment. I don't jump on a soapbox about it, but there is no denying it.

2. There are plenty of other pedals that will suck a battery dry almost as fast; they just typically aren't OD pedals, because the "more than 9VDC thing" has only recently become popular (although something like the Klon Centaur is an example of an ~18VDC "internal" pedal from prior to this trend).

3. Okay, I said two, but (most) amps don't run off of batteries. Why not grab power from the same source for everything?

So I say go for it, hoping that you can return it if it doesn't sound to your liking. I think it sounds great, but it's hard to make a subjective recommendation just based on that.

Awesome. Thanks for your input! I play clean and generally just use my Fulltone Fat boost or an old 77' TS 808. With the New Amp coming I wanted to try a new flavor. This pedal sounds right on paper......I'm probably going to just go for it. The Pedal effect warehouse has a 30 day garantee so I'll have plenty of time to return it if its not what I'm looking for.
Can I just ask.......Does it have a prefence for Humbuckers or single coils?

Thanks again!

I don't have one but have considered it. Someone on the Strat forum just picked one up and is quite happy with it after hearing Matt Schofield who primarily plays Strats and Teles. I have a couple Matt Schofield CD's and it sounds good with single coils when he plays it.

Thanks! yeah thats pretty much what I'm going on. The guys that use it sound incredible. But I have a feeling Robben Ford and Matt Schofeild could play through a Gorilla amp and sound fantasic!

I owned the SOV-1 - it's a great pedal. Very smooth overdrive, kind of Robben Ford-ish. Great build quality. I liked it much better than the Zendrive. The SOV-2 ios a smaller footprint, and I've heard the sound is similar.

I've read that Richie Kotzen uses one.
