So I bought a used Bad Monkey

at GC for 30 bucks. Thing looks brand new.

So far Im thinking its a pretty cool pedal. Dont know if I love it. Im still messing with it though.

Im running it through a PV Classic 30 with AM ST. Strat or Tele. They sound pretty good with the BM, but I havent found the sound I want out of it yet.

How do guys with similar setups have your Monkey setup?

Level around 9 oclock
Bass around 3 or 4 oclock
Treble around 3 or 4 oclock
Gain around 1 oclock

Just for adding a bit of hair and a slight mid boost (less than a TS).

That makes sense. I sometimes turn the bass up a little louder than the treble. I like the two tone knobs. You can fatten the bottom without changing the top crunch.

Great pedal/great price.

Back when I ran a Bad Monkey on my board, I liked it better as a fat boost than as an OD. I ran it after a couple of other ODs, and used it as a lead boost with them, or to fatten & thicken up my cleans. My settings were: Gain @ 9 o'clock, Bass @ 3 o'clock to max, Treble @ 3+ o'clock, Volume up.

Whats your take on tone suck? I've never played one, and I'm just curious if you feel like its hurting your tone when off? :)

I've heard they can do some ugly things, but would love to hear your personal opinion!

After seeing a youtube video that showed some tone-suck with the bad monkey,I put mine in a true bypass loop and listended carefully in and out of the signal chain.I heard no audible difference.
But.......my strat is loaded with emgs so that may cancel out any meaningfull conclusion. I wouldnt worry about it though.Just turn the trebel on your amp up one knotch if you you think there is any tone suck in your pedalboard.

I like the bad monkey better than the TS9 , I have both on the board for now. The bad monkey sounds more like an overdriven amp and the TS9 sounds like a fuzz pedal.

Try a vintage TS808. That's tone suck. Does what it's supposed to do (plus a few other things...)

I can't hear any difference at all. Trust me...I've tried. I A/B about 100 times trying to hear the difference and I just couldn't.

I saw a demo where a guy captured a noticable difference in the bypass signal on a BM...I'm wondering if he was using the speaker sim output? There are two output jacks...BEWARE of the speaker sim output jack. IT DOES have a noticeable difference in sound which is not good to my ears.

But the regular output on the BM is perfectly fine thank you very much...no better or worse than any other buffered pedal IMHO, and I've had many.

YMMV.

They are not "just" nice for the money. They are nice...period.

People are going to flame me for this...but...I bought a MHP 72 degree pedal earlier this year and I like my BM better. I've already told Keith this and he totally understands (fabulous guy to deal with by the way). The 72 degree is a great pedal, don't get me wrong, but for me it's limited to certain situations...kind of a one trick pony. By contrast, the BM will adapt to just about any rig I plug it into.

So I have a 72 degree in mint condition sitting in a box in my basement, and my BM goes to every gig. Go figure.

All of this is subjective....YMMV.
