$180 new is a Fulltone Supa-Trem. Or a Voodoo Lab Tremolo is $130 (I think that's the price). Everyone else on this site will give you the same answer. These two pedals rock.
I don't know what your definition of "affordable" is, but I've always gone for quality over quantity. So while some guitarists might have a lot of pedals, I have just a few good ones. In any case, I can't recommend any trem pedals under the $130 mark, except for the Boss TR-2. Yes, it has a volume drop, but it's still a decent pedal for under $100.

The Guyatone VT-3 is a great pedal, and you can get a used one pretty cheap. I got mine for around $40.
Lots of people will recommend the Danelectro Tuna Melt. It's cheap and sounds great but comes in a plastic housing, which may not be for everyone.

Been using a Rocktron Surf pedal for several years and really like it. It treats the bass and treble frequencies differently for a truly greasy sound. It's discontinued but you might be able to find one. And it's got pulsing LED indicators. It also has an enhancer circuit and a pretty good compressor.

My Fulltone Supa Trem is always on. I just switch between hard and soft clip to engage or disengage the effect. With the intensity backed off all the way, in soft clip, with a little volume boost via the trim pot, it really brightens things up. Oh yeah, and the trem sounds great too.

I have the Diamond trem, it's a relatively subtle trem but it's good b/c it has many modes, including a rhythmic trem and 4 different wave types. PGS did a good review on their site if you want to check it out.

I've been on a trem search for 3 years, and here are my conclusions:
Best bang for buck: Dano Cool Cat. It's got a bunch of versatility, from pretty slow to raygun fast, it has a switch for square wave, helicopter madness, true bypass, tough metal casing, and I think it costs $40 or so new. Best if you're willing to spend a little more: Malekko Trem. Woah, it is awesome. It gets really deep and swampy, and just sounds gorgeous. The pots are a little funny, very sensitive, and it can be tough to dial in a good sound. Gets a really deep trem sound, but not choppy, or squarewavey. I thought the Cool Cat was a little too subtle, but this one is great. The winner: Catalinbread Semaphore. It's expensive, but it is worth it. Crazy slow to insano fast, square, triangle, a huge range of depths, and the shape knob is actually really, really useful. Like I said, pricey, but worth it. |

11 years with my trusty Boss TR-2 Trem- I use it with my Blues Jr. and I cannot tell it apart from the Trem on my old DR!

The minidano TunaMelt is great except that it lacks a volume knob. you need one for the perceived volume cut when trem is engaged, IMO |
