Scratchy Crybaby pot: Clean or Replace???

Should I just spray some cleaner in there, or take the plunge on one of those new sealed units Dunlop has on their site???

Thanks for any and all input.

Scott

Try to clean it first. It is easy to do and obviously cheaper. Mine is from the 80's. I sprayed some Deoxit in there a few times when it got scratchy and it seemed to help for awhile. When that stopped working I swapped out the pot.

What clayfeat said. The old one will obviously get dirty again, but with a little maintenance it should work fine.

Clayfeat, which DeoxIT product would you recommend:

Contact Cleaner, Gold, or Shield???

Thanks,
Scott

The new pot is not that much money - replace the old one and you're good for a couple more years.

Never mind. Looks like it should be Contact Cleaner, then followed by Shield, perhaps.

The newer sealed ones had better last longer than that.

You would hope so, but I don't have much faith in any electronic parts being built today.

There are several high quality 'boutique' pots available- just be prepared to pay through the nose for them.

I was going to mention a better quality pot, but the price difference between a truly better one and something you typically find will probably cause a bit of price shock.

The truth be told, older mechanical components that are "serviceable" tend to be more durable. It wouldn't hurt to give a shot of contact cleaner first.

When mine gets scratchy, I use the contact cleaner - but I also order a new one at that point, because I've found the contact-cleaner fix doesn't last too long.
