Nile has a guitar he calls the hit maker that he's used on Chic, David Bowie, Madonna, etc records. It's a 59-60 hard tail strat. I read in a GP article that he uses some compression and some Peavey Classic 50's, which surprised me.
I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but despite his "clean Fender" kind of tone- I think I read in GP(years ago) that he always went "direct" (assuming with compression/reverb added from the board?)
Tele/Tex-Mex Strat/Dano '56 U2>MHP "Stubble Trouble" FUZZ/Blues Driver/Barber Direct Drive/MXR Classic Distortion> MORE PEDALS> '68 Deluxe Reverb or blonde Blues Jr. Rock On!
Guys, I've seen two peavey amps mentioned that didn't exist back in the 70's. I think Nile is not a gear nut and so probably plays whatever the rental company puts on the stage and sounds good. I think Nile Rodgers' sound can be gotten with any amp that is fairly clean. I think guitar wise 'strat-ish' will get it. he probably had a phaser back then and maybe something like a rat or distorition+ for a few tunes...
There isn't much of a point of gear hunting on someone who had his favorite guitar for recording but sounded pretty much the same with whatever he played....
...in this life, you have either just tooted, about to toot or holding one in.
Whenever I wanted to get a Niles sound, I would have the amp super-clean, use a Strat, select the neck pickup, get a completely dry sound and chop away. If I had a compressor pedal, I might have kicked it in, but what I had seemed to work.
