Nile Rodgers - Getting that sound

Does anyone know how Nile Rodgers set up his rig for live work?

dig it...

I remember him playing a musicman solid body, but I know he played strats too.

A great article to read right here

I think amp wise, it sounds like fender clean all the way...

He also played Tokai strat copies and everything I've ever heard him play sounds like front pickup all the way...

I think a strat into a deluxe would get you there.

RE:Nile Rodgers

Nile has a guitar he calls the hit maker that he's used on Chic, David Bowie, Madonna, etc records. It's a 59-60 hard tail strat. I read in a GP article that he uses some compression and some Peavey Classic 50's, which surprised me.

Cool video, Randy.

Those Les Paul knobs actually look kinda cool on his Strat. I wouldn't have liked it on paper, but it doesn't look bad.

Always loved his funky method. Not a bad producer either.

I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but despite his "clean Fender" kind of tone- I think I read in GP(years ago) that he always went "direct" (assuming with compression/reverb added from the board?)

He is the "rhythm guitar glue" too, in the great Vaughan Brothers "Family Style" album

Awesome information. I had no idea he was the guitarist on all those old songs my mom always played when I was growing up!

I will have to spend some time learning his work!

Thank you for posting this info!!

Every time I've seen him (within the 3 last years), he was playing a Peavey Delta Blues (15' speaker).
You can have a short glimpse of it on this video, at 3:41 :

If you listen to a song like 'Hangin', it sounds pretty evident he recorded the guitar direct in the console (with a good preamp - like a Neve one !)

Guys, I've seen two peavey amps mentioned that didn't exist back in the 70's. I think Nile is not a gear nut and so probably plays whatever the rental company puts on the stage and sounds good. I think Nile Rodgers' sound can be gotten with any amp that is fairly clean. I think guitar wise 'strat-ish' will get it. he probably had a phaser back then and maybe something like a rat or distorition+ for a few tunes...

There isn't much of a point of gear hunting on someone who had his favorite guitar for recording but sounded pretty much the same with whatever he played....

Whenever I wanted to get a Niles sound, I would have the amp super-clean, use a Strat, select the neck pickup, get a completely dry sound and chop away. If I had a compressor pedal, I might have kicked it in, but what I had seemed to work.
