Jeff Beck in a box?
Anybody know any good pedals that combine a great overdriven lead tone with a bit of delay? I'd love a pedal to kick in just for solos that would give me that and a little volume boost.

Over drive and delay in a single box?
Probably going to have to get some sort of digital multi-FX unit for that... which seems like it would take you in a direction away from JB's tone. I don't ever even see him use pedals live much... except for the Boss phaser that resides mostly atop his amp.

Jeff Beck has had many very different tones over the years,Yadbirds,Truth/Beck-ola era,Blow By Blow,Jan Hammer era,Flash era,Crazy Legs (rockabily), Guitar Shop etc....You might wanna be a little more specific. As far as effects...Beck IS an effect device

What era Jeff Beck? Could be a Rat and a Digitech delay or a Marshall TSL and a rack delay or going way back a Colorsound Overdriver and an Echoplex. Or .... A lot of ways to skin that cat and Jeff's got a lot of hides piled up over the years.

I finished his biography recently, Crazy fingers, and his most steady equipment line-up seemed to be the Strat, Rat, and Marshall. That would be post-Colorsound Overdriver, and if there was anything in between I don't remember. The Wah often makes an appearance. He was never much of an FX guy.
His new Ronnie Scott video has a Lexicon reverb on top of his Marshall. He had 3 or 4 Marshalls on stage. On a small stage like Ronnie Scott's I can only guess that he had some wet/dry amplifier set-up. |

I suppose I putJ eff Bewc mostly as a reference to the kind of overdrive I like- the new Fulltone Plimsoul pedal is a really good place to start. I was just wondering if anybody knew of any stomp boxes that wouldn't entail having to step on two things to take a solo. It seems like there's a void in the marketplace there. I have a nice amp and nice pedals, so I'm not drawn to a full on modeling pedal, but it's a hassle doing the little pedal dance at the start of a solo to get drive and a little delay.

Other than a multi I doubt you can.... but... You could go your fave OD and fave Delay that give you the sound you want. Have them set ready to go and use a single switch to kick them in or out. Shouldn't be hard to do.

Loop boxes are GREAT little pedalboard widgets. Not only can you trigger a specific set of boxes all with a single stomp, but you can convert something with "bad bypass" to at least true mechanical bypass. I keep meaning to mod my Dano Dan Echo (input buffer is WAY too low of impedance), but a little looper stomp is so much of an easier solution.

![]() Danelectro Rockabye is a delay and overdrive in one box. But you'll need play to like Beck to sound like him. Equipment-wise, these are worth a watch if you haven't already seen them. The third vid talks a bit about his pedals: |

I think that is the most important thing, right there. Any gear that he uses is going to sound like him. Any of us could duplicate his rig, and NOT sound like him.
I think of Strat players like Beck and Adrian Belew (who isn't playing them these days IIRC), and it oftentimes doesn't sound like that is what they are using. Almost humorous that he says that the Klon Centaur is "just used as a bit of gritty boost." If that doesn't make it clear what Beck's take on pedals is, IDK what would be. IMO, any gear is just a means to an end (for JB).

I agree with the comment that Beck IS an effect device himself !
Other than that the new Plimsoul OD from Fulltone would be a good one. And a good multiFX (lexicon, TC, or 2 Strymon pedals) is required for his more "ambiant" playing. |

Please let Jeff out of the box... he hates that!
When I hear Jeff, I think about the classic Strat, Rat, and Marshall combination. On occasion, there is some ring mod (Maestro) and leslie (Rotosphere). On the last few studio albums, he has been using his Charlie Stringer wah a bit. The thing about Jeff is that his tone is a combination of mojo and absolute commitment to the notes he is playing. The man translates his soul into melodies. Here is a link from Guitar World... It mentions some techniques and gear. http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/...u/nov-07/32485

According to the folks at Fulltone, he used their Catalyst pedal in the studio.
