What is the Effector 13 Console II?
Quite simply it is a guitar pedal in which you can insert two specially designed cartridges to create your own unique effects

What do the cartridges do?For now the cartridges designers will be focusing on Fuzz, Distortion, Overdrive, and Boost fx, but there is the possibility of expanding into other kinds of fx in the future!

What are the controls? The Effector 13 Console II consists of two "channels" that can be switched on / off independently, with the channel on the right cascading into the channel on the left (like a standard signal chain). Each channel has four knobs whose functions change depending on which cartridge is inserted into the unit.

So the controls change depending on the cartridge? That is correct. For instance, the devi ever Soda Meiser's controls are left-to-right, Volume, Tone, Starve, and Gain. The devi ever Punch Love's controls are Volume, Tone, Grit, and Gain.

Can I build my own cartridge?Unfortunately the current format used for the Effector 13 Console II requires a cartridge to be designed with SMD components which isn't very user friendly for the casual DIY enthusiast. Fortunately there will be an adapter available so that you can plug any standard breadboard into the Effector 13 Console II for prototyping purposes.

When will the Effector 13 Console II be available? We are currently aiming to release the Effector 13 Console II as well as the Devi Ever Punch Love and Soda Meiser cartridges by Summer 2011.

When will cartridges from other companies be available? The brilliant minds at Dwarfcraft, Fuzz Hugger, Infanem, Malekko, and Mellowtone have all committed to designing cartridges that will be available at various times through out 2011.

How much will the Effector 13 Console II cost? The Effector 13 Console II will be available for $135, and will include the Devi Ever Punch Love boost / overdrive cartridge.

How much will cartridges cost?Devi Ever cartridges will be available for $50. We are hoping that the other companies will aim to sell at this price point as well.

Thanks for mentioning this. Very interesting.

My first reaction is "What a corny idea..." followed closely by "...that could turn out pretty awesome." I certainly applaud them for trying something different and taking a chance on it.

I would guess, like actual video game consoles, it will live and die by first and third party support - they'll need a bunch of truly desirable effects (I almost said games!) available at launch or soon after. Without that, I think it will be tough to gain traction. If it's mostly weird fuzz circuits, it could be tough.

How's pricing strike you guys? Honestly, I think it sounds about right for the market. But then I think, heck, $50 for an SMD cart without jacks, switch, pots (which are often the most expensive parts of hand-built pedals, right?) sounds like crazy mark-up.

ZVex is kinda doing that thing as well with his Inventobox. Basically, you can buy his boards and install them yourself in an enclosure, say a Hard On and a Fuzz Factory. I think it is a cool idea. Personally, I am sure that I would mess it up somehow!

$50 dows seem high for an SMD cart, but then I think about what some of these would go for within the enclosure with the pots and switches, jack, etc..Often they will go $100-200. So having the enclosure part taken care of within the console(hopefully a one time expense) you are left paying for designs which would otherwise be prohibitive if paying for a bunch of pedals, as wsell as the opportunity to mix and match. Then again, you are limited by how many you can use at one time. If you buy 5 or six of the cartridges, you can still only use two at a time. This is the biggest drawback/limitiation I see to using the product in a live context..In recording or practice you have a bit more levity, but still face limitations as opposed to buying 5 or 6 different pedals within a separate enclosure. To get things going, you are correct...they should have as many different carts available right away to gain traction through a wider audience than just a fuzz/OD context. The cored audience will have a lot of stuff already.

Looks very interesting and I expect it to be quite popular. Foxrox has been using a similar system for a while called Zim Cards.
The exposed slots are questionable though. Being down at floor level with the rest of the stompboxes means that they will get full of dirt, dust, dog fur etc.
Even the old Nintendo's and Sega systems had a flap or cover that would cover it up some to keep most of the dirt out.

Instead of a flap, it looks like it has a dedicated sliding doo...There are what appear to be sliders on either side of each slot, and they are all "up" as if the doors are open. At least I hope so..I'm pretty excited about this thing.

More brains!

The new console design is really cool looking, and the cartridges look like they are nice and tough, easy to handle. This is pretty exciting, plus I like stuff like this, kind of specialized, with interchangeable components. Like those old Ampeg guitars, where you can slide out the pickups on the fly, a different pup for every song.

She a kick starter campaign with other pedal makers joining in to supply cartridges for the console. They are proposing 3 different models.
