GT8 multi
Well I just couldn't stand seeing this thing sit around so I took with me this weekend cause I was going to have time so I downloaded a PDF how to file from Bossgtcentral forum. I know all about this debate of multiple vs pedals....I have both setups. I set out to get 4 patiches, Clean, TS9,Marshall lead tone and a good wet verb for surf. After a few hours of reading and tweaking I have finally produced these tones into my 5e3 and my vibrochamp amp. Amazingly these are absolutely as good as any of my individual pedals. I honestly didn't think I could get this good of sound out of the gt8. I've always felt it was in there cause I've heard it. Now I've got it and am very pleased. just had to share this. From my iPad
Cheers :lolce24

Demos?
I've always felt that people give up too soon with digital modelers/MFXs. I know I sure do. But I've seen some pretty amazing pro-level demos of this stuff on YouTube that's pure guitar>MFX>Interface that sounds great -- though there are hugely more bubba demos that richly reinforce every negative stereotype about how these units sound. I have a problem with getting presence, definition and clarity out of M/MFXs, but I believe it can be done -- just not by me.

Anchotet Ive had thisbthing for a few years and have fought it a bunch. It appears I have it figured at least door these patches. One of the big problems with the gt8 is you get FIZZ with your high gain stuff but I've been able to eliminate that now and I'm getting great clear and punchy tones.
Cheers Ce24 My typing on this iPad is bad....sorry for the errors

Congrats. I'm a big fan of multifx but I could never get the fizz out of my GT-8's tone. I recently picked up an ME-25 and found it was easy to get good tones out of it. The GNX4 is another example of a multifx that can sound good but is almost impossible for mere mortals to tweak. I finally broke down and bought the MFX supermodel pack for it.

The software was lousy and the Yamaha USB/MIDI driver for interfacing it was totally screwed-up and could not be uninstalled, though it would fatally screw up most other MIDI-interfacing. Only way I was ever able to get it off was to reinstall the OS. The unit itself was amazing, though.

LOL, I've got 3 Magicstomps and you are right. I only program them with the software. No idea how to do it manually (deep edit) or even if I would want to if I read the instructions.
I've got a laptop that won't work at all with the MS SW. I think it's because I previously installed usb based midi drivers for 2 other types of devices. Not sure if it's Yamaha's fault because the same problem seems to exist with the other installed drivers. It's like I hit a limit. |

I believe you have hit the key to working with the mulit's; keep your focus specific. When people use pedals they usually have a finite number of effects and then craft their tone from there. For some reason when they get in front of a multi they want to turn on every option at once and then say it sucks. This is no different than walking into the store and saying there are too many pedal/amp options so I can't get a good tone. Also as best I can recall most of the interviews I have read with professional/touring guitarist that use multi's, they use it to get their sound. They are not building 20 different patches into libraries of sound. |

No worries it's nice to give back to the people struggling with that black box of wires! Really I just stuck together a bunch of geniuses ideas into a readable format. Doesn't stop me getting 4 queries a week on the 7 cable method or whats inside a harmonic converger...

The last firmware/software came with all the presets for all the guitar, bass and acoustic. When the Magicstomp was discontinued, Yamaha put this "one size fits all" CD up for download. Unfortunately, that MIDI/USB driver problem has kept me from using the unit in the studio. I can't afford to permanently screw up MIDI again. Quote:
It doesn't play well with others and it won't go home. There's no reason why you can't use a J-Station and a MagicStomp on the same computer, if not at the same time, at least...but you can't. Same with Digitech. If the Yamaha MIDI/USB has ever been installed, these will never, ever work. That Yamaha icon in Settings will never go away. I played phone tag with Yamaha support about this but never got an answer. I should try again. I'd like to use the unit. Someday.
