@w1ll1a9m Most people are quick to turn up the tone like a tubescreamer but if you keep it at noon or below, it will sound great!

THAT is not like any DS-1 I have ever played...and it's not his hands. There's something fishy going on.

I own one. I have had it for a long time. I never really liked it and I never use it.

I saw this one yesterday - a big HUH?! from me in response...

Either Andy's tricking everyone with a modded DS-1, or Andy is really the David Copperfield of guitar pedals.

Personally I think A LOT of the demos sound a little "off"....and not always in a flattering way. I don't think it's intentional or dishonest, I just think they might be doing somethign in a strange way, I dunno.

I wouldn't say fishy, but I would say that there's a whole mess of top dollar recording and editing gear that the DS-1 wouldn't even serve as a tiny down payment on. Neither would the DRRI if that's still being used, as well.

I just went to the site, and can't seem to (any longer) dig up the details on everything they use, but the mic, mic pre(s), processing at recording, post editing, all of it is top shelf stuff.

I wonder if they'd be interested in just trying it with a Blues Jr., a SM57, basic USB computer interface, no compression/limiting/EQ adjustments/etc. Prolly not.

I think that hou35male's sig line sez it all...

Yea Telenut is right, I just received one of Telenut's pedals and is no doubt a fantastic mod he does to these. Highly recommended. The distortion just gates open and is a pleasure to the ear. Yummy sustain.

I don't know what they sound like modified about I've always thought of the DS-1 as a bottom barrel distortion box....they make good amps sound like the $100 solid state fuzz amps that kids play at guitar center.

DS-1 - Fugettaboutit! "Johnny DeMarco"

Yikes Yikes Yikes.

The original MIJ's were much better, mainly because they had a pair of clipping diodes that didn't induce such a mean amount of the fizzies.

That said, you can do some cool stuff with them when you mod them, indeed.

Here's a clip that I did with one that I modded in a pretty unconventional way.

The pedal is on the entire time, and I just worked the volume knob to go from clean to something barely resembling the stock DS-1 tone. I was going for more of a neutral OD tone, with some emphasis on a clear top end, and a whole lotta cleanup.

And for the record, I didn't use a "PGS golden standard" type recording rig. It was a Nash'ed Tele into the modded DS-1, into a BF'ed '79 DR (nothing fancy tube or speaker wise!). I mic'ed it with a SM57, into a Presonus Firebox, into a Mac Mini. From there it went straight into Quicktime X (simple audio/video recorder), and then I converted it into an MP3 with Audacity (basic shareware). No compression, EQ, or any of that stuff.

I admit that this particular set of tweaks is very unusual, and not what the average DS-1 owner would likely want, since most folks want to turn it into a JCM800 or something, it seems. But I had fun, just the same. I thought it might be relevant to this discussion.

I've said this about Pro Guitar Shop to everyone I've met in person. A lot of online videos Master their video. PRS take it to a whole new level.
Same reason some people think Humbuckers are superior to Single coils. Every Humbucker on album is given a bass cut and the EQ boost to the upper harmonics, to make it sound more like a single coil. Roll over metalheads.

I've never liked Pro Guitar Shops demos. You never physically see anyone play.

You da man 11!

Hard to believe that the DeMarco video and your clip use the same buiding block box.

Very cool 11. You should write a pedal book about the evolution and functionality of some famous pedals. I would buy a copy. You write well.

Have you ever read a book called "Fuzz and Feedback" about tones in the 60's? It's an 11 x 14 soft cover with lots of gear photos. Right up your alley.

Yikes, indeed! The best thing about that video was his clean sound...actually pretty good. I didn't know ugly guitars could sound like that.

Oh, and apparently he didn't read the Boss effects handbook where it states it is of the utmost importance to run Chorus after Delay.

DeMarco gets on my nerves after a while. Seems like a nice guy, but those videos annoy the hell out of me.

I could be hallucinating but does Johnny DM have a brother (guitarist) that demos too, for another company? I could swear I have seen a "decaf De Marco" somewhere!

BTW, I'm not a big fan of shredding stuff that Johhny D does, but he sure seems like a pretty damn good player-I sure can't play like that!
