Honky Tonk Fuzz Tone

I may be out in left field here, but I recently borrowed a friends Univox SuperFuzz. You know the big stomp box from the sixties, no ac adapter, all 9 volt battery power. I was able to set the fuzz effect fairly low to where it yielded a very nasaly fuzz tone reminiscent of sixties honky tonk tones.

Is this the only fuzz box that is going to get me into this tonal ballpark? I've tried a couple of others: a Keeley Fuzz Head and a Protone Springfield Fuzz. The Keeley was nice with a lot of tonal parameters, but noisey. The Protone was quiet, but just too much fuzz at any setting.
Maybe I'll just have to hold out for the real deal and live with no ac adapter capability.

Oh, and it's not like the original wasn't noisey either.

The Lovetone Big Cheese will do a lot of tones and many more than a Superfuzz, with the exception of the upper octave that the Superfuzz sometimes has.

I'm not sure that octave thing is what I'm hearing. I just want the twang with some hair on it.

You might want to check with Tym Guitars in Australia. He makes some cool nasty garage fuzz's. I'm pretty sure he does custom builds too, so if he doesn't have one that will do what you want he can probably build one that will.

It might not be fuzz that I'm hearing.

I wish I could site a particular artist or a song with this sound, It's actually quite prevalent. I know country pickers use compression and chorus quite a lot, but those aren't the sounds I'm hearing.

What other effect would add just a touch of hair to the twang?

When I want that sound, I just plug my Tele into a slightly overdriven amp.

That's how I've been approaching it lately, too. Just thought there might be something I'm missing. :?

Well according to

Some posts over on the Telecaster Discussion Page Reissue forum. Roy Nichols may be the player that first used the tone i'm searching for. However, it was in the mid 70's when he did it. Roy used a cheap battery powered Radio Shack amp to get an overdriven fuzzy tone on "The Runnin' Kind" and "Livin' With the Shades Pulled Down".
