Stacking overdrives....what's your combo?

After a severe addiction to buying overdrive pedals I am back to my trusty Blues Driver again. This time with a little twist.

I set The Blues Driver with a real low gain setting and run a Barber LTD into the front end to boost it and add a little more overdrive. This combo is perfect. I can go from a slightly over-driven, clear kind of tone to thick and nasty in an instant and it sounds natural. I also run a Fuzz Face into the BD for some over the top type of stuff.

Stacking overdrives can be interesting. Some pedals play well with others, and sometimes it dose not work out at all. What is your secret combination?

Just about anything into a Timmy! :)

Last night's Gig, I was very happy with the Blues Pro into a Timmy. This was with a Strat and a Carmen Ghia.
For more Gainier stuff, bordering on a Distortion, and it also works well for a tightened, more focused Midrange for Slide, it was Mo'D Clone into a Timmy.

Sometimes however, I run an Eternity into the Timmy. Warm and Smooth is how I would describe that.

Very versatile set up, using 2 ODs.

I've been using a stock Boss OD-3 as my main drive pedal. I feed another low-gain drive pedal into it. Currently, that's a Monte Alums modded SD-1. I've used others in that position, and I change them out as the mood hits. The others have included a Dano TOD and a Tech 21 Double Drive. They all sound different, but all work well in front of the OD-3. I get a nice clean-to-breakup sound with the OD3 by itself, and then it goes to a nice, harmonically alive sustain when the other pedal is pushing it. The best part is that this combo works great with every amp I've used, so I am no longer dependent on any particular amp to get my tone.

sd-1 is the permanent one in my board. sometimes i use a ts-5 or an od-1 to boost it. other times i use the sd-1 to boost a modded ds-1, hm-2 or the od-1. i'm planning to get an od-3 this month

My OD chain is a little unusual in that it's set up in stages of gain designed to increase volume and sustain without losing bite or clarity.

I'm using a TS9 (analogman mod) with an Analogman King of Tone and a Boss GE7.

The TS9 is my main solo boost. If I need more sustain and more girth, I kick in one of the 3 stages on my Analogman KoT pedal. If I need more, I add the GE7 with is set for a small volume boost and a slightly fatter EQ.

The result is, everything from typical rock solo boost to outright arena rock solo tones with killer sustain and cutting articulation. No fizzy sounds here!

I really prefer to boost an amps natural overdrive with a clean boost. To me, if my amp doesn't cut it for overdrive/distortion...then I bought the wrong amp.

TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer used in the TS9 mode. I have used other pedals but they never seem to have the transparency of this pedal. I can lighten up on my playing and you can't really tell that it is in the chain. Dig in and nice sweet stuff.

I really want to try a Timmy but I am short on coinage right now. It's on my list though.

In the mean time Tube Screamers do a great job.

Lately ive been enjoying stacking a bb preamp on a fulltone fulldrive 2. Its just killer tone with excellent fullness and sustain.

I use a lot of different od combinations and Im usually swapping them every couple of months but this one might stick for a while.

I run a ZVex SuperDuper into a BBE Green Screamer into my 5E3. It gives me a lot of great sounding drive options.

Well I don't know if my setup "counts" because I'm not using actual pedals but rather the M13 stompbox modeler (which is incredibly accurate to the real thing IMO)

That being said, I actually use a couple of scenarios:

Chandler Tube Driver into a second Tube Driver. First is set at a slightly higher drive setting. I'm able to use the second for a little breakup, the first for a stronger breakup and then I use both for a nice creamy distortion.

I also use the Ibanez TS9 model into that same secondary Tube Driver pedal and it creates a very cool tone.

I've also been experimenting (as used this morning in worship service) with the Line 6 version of the MXR Micro Amp [Called Boost Comp] cascading into the TS9 which is a classic but very effective setup at cutting through the mix.

I've been a fan of cascading effects for a while and do a lot with layering delays (sometimes three in line!), set at different note intervals [dotted eighth, quarter, triplet eighth] which has resulted in some very cool sounds.

I use a CMAT Mods Butah OD pedal which is akin to the Timmy in that it is a very transparent OD with beautiful smooth breakup. You can pretty much put any OD/Fuzz/Boost pedal in front of it and it will sound great and retain clarity and note separation very well.

Right now on my little portable homemade briefcase board I run an EP Booster (always on), into a great little 808 type OD by Stomp Under Foot into a silicon fuzz also by SUF, into the Butah. Any combination of two out of these three OD's sounds great. But my favorite is the Screaming Panda fuzz set for low gain into the Butah. Ahh....just thinking about it makes me want to go home and jam (yes I'm at work ).

I also love the Keeley Java Boost. It sounds great when any one of the OD's is engaged, but it sounds especially nice after the Mean Green Machine. And when I play through my ridiculously too large pedal board I run all of these OD's and two SUF Muffs into a Zenman Tube Driver distortion/pre-amp which sounds amazing when combined with any OD. It adds a whole new dimension to the OD without losing or mudding up the pedal's original signal.

Don't laugh (actually, I don't care if you do ), but I really like using a Boss Metal Zone for low-gain, crunchy, slightly-scooped overdrive, then putting a Tube Screamer in front of that (gain all the way down, volume and tone all the way up) for smooth, sustaining leads.

I'm not laughing! Just modded an MT-2 with the Indyguitarist diesel mod and
1N270 germanium diodes.I also installed a switch to replace r41 with two different resistors for more/less gain.I use it with less gain but its still mesa boogie/Santana tone.I also changed out all the 1uf electros with poly film caps.It kicked my modded DS-1 off the board as my lead/solo pedal.

By the way,I use a modded ts9 or a boss sd-1 for low gain/blues or feedback and sustain if I hit the MT-2 with one.And I'm using an old solid state peavey that really takes to pedals, but like the Metal Zone also gets a laugh !
Until folks hear it that is!

I used to run a DOD OD/Preamp 250 into a Rt 66. I used the 250 as mor of a clean boost, just a little grind and the RT 66 as a hotter OD with a bit more sizzle.

B4 I had the Rt 66 I used a Fuzz face the same way. Totally different sounds that complimented each other quite well in my opinion.

I like using different overdrives together for a "hybrid" sound. To me it makes since especially if you are playing mult styles that you need different OD sounds for.

Running my LTD SR into my Pork Loin right now. Great to be able to set the EQ on the PL to push the mids and just layer that on top of the LTD.
